We have stayed at this hotel 5 times - both as a couple, parent-child, friends and a whole family of 5. Accommodation has been comfortable for all visits - and most particularly the family suite available, which was excellent for the whole group. We have also stayed in the Princess Suite, two bedrooms and bathrooms and a sitting room - very comfortable.
Staff at the hotel have always been exceptionally polite and helpful - and I have never had any pressure put on me to visit a friend's gem store - referred to in another post. Reasonable English is spoken by almost all direct contact staff.
The bar is a great place to chill at the end of a long day, before bed has to happen - and always enjoy the piano player and singer, as well as some of the antics of the girls in the bar - off the cuff entertainment with bottle juggling! Cocktails and my favourite Corona beer are relatively expensive for Thailand - but available, and appreciated at this time of day!
Rooms are not luxurious, but I don't require this for a holiday. I spend as little time in them as possible anyway! Bathrooms are large, with bath and shower, and plentiful hot water (if you really need it). Beds are fine for me - and there is a bar fridge, room safe, proficient air conditioning, bottled water per person per day.
Food experience a little disappointing - as I am not really a Japanese restaurant fan - and the revolving restaurant serves 80% this cuisine. The Chinese restaurant in the hotel is EXCELLENT - which you would expect in Chinatown! As stated many times, the breakfast is excellent - and usually sufficient for most of the day's intake for me. Room Services is not so great - and I have had a gut upset which I suspected came from there. There is a Chinese bakery in the lobby, a coffee and icecream shop (new), cafe with Western style club sandwiches etc. (adequate - poor at calculating correct change), ATM, small shop for drinks etc and UPS office for the shopping, if needed - as well as businesses, some of which sell retail at good prices - eg. Disney shop. There is also a tailor in the hotel, who I have never used.
We have come to know a few of the tuktuk drivers outside, and the hard sell stops with familiarity and business. They are just trying to make a living. BUT the pesky "no-meter" taxi driver who lurks is another story - easily managed by just saying no and walking on!
The LOCATION is nothing short of excellent - I love Chinatown - from the moment you walk outside, the bustle is upon you. The Chinatown markets, Little India, the thieves market (best source for watches), Memorial Bridge market at night, the flower market, river vegetable markets......
Walk 5 minute to Ratchawongse Pier and the great river system of Bangkok - this is an all boat stop - and has express boats. Walk to Hualamphong station is about 10 minutes NE, just outside Chinatown, KhaoSan Rd is walkable - 30 mins, and a good sight see in itself - or 80Bt tops for tuktuk. Grand Palace and Wat Pho 20 minute walk, winding through vegetable and flower markets, and very enjoyable and scenic - just watch out for touts when you walk, especially with a map in hand! Walking around is half the fun, and for us, part of the holiday attraction, watching Thai life, rather than rushing from one sight to another - take water though!
As you can tell, we enjoy staying at this hotel - for much more than the hotel experience itself. The whole setting and around the clock access to things to see is excellent. I get up early in the morning, and walk around the markets, watching the monks go about their morning routine, ogling and gawking at the food and camera snapping with permission.....then the shops open........then they close and the night begins. Just be careful not to venture too far from the crowds, as this area is also a red light district with all the associated activities - so I am told. It seems that Chinatown never stops - any time you look out your window (and the views are awesome), you can see movement - coming and going etc.
