I have just returned from 2 stays at the Sofitel in Bangkok and have to say I was really impressed with what I found. It was the first time I had stayed with Sofitel so wasn’t 100% sure what to expect but I wasn't disappointed with what I found.
I can still smell the fresh Lotus flowers and the scent of jasmine cent as I walked in to the hotel!!!!!
All the staff were very polite and couldn't do enough for us, nothing was too much trouble.
The Hotel itself is modern and very clean, the rooms are of adequate size and the beds were some of the best I’ve slept in at a hotel.
The hotel is on the Silom road which is not the most picturesque but it is in a convenient location, the sky train is only a 5 minute walk away and everything you want attraction or shopping wise is only a short taxi ride away.
When we were there we ate at a couple of lovely restaurants. The most local ones were Ban Chiang which is just behind the Holiday Inn on Silom road (about a 10-15 Min walk away). It serves traditional Thai food and the food is lovely and really inexpensive to, we went there a couple of times as we were really impressed with it, you can sit outside or inside in the old style Colonial house.
The two other restaurants we went to and would recommend are the Mango tree which is a 10 minute walk away, again serves traditional Thai food at very reasonable prices and with good services. The other restaurant is a must see even for the Décor and is called Cabbages & Condoms, this restaurant is a 10 minute taxi ride away from the hotel and if you ask the concierge at the Sofitel he will book a table there for you. I won’t ruin the surprise as to what the décor is like but I would say take your camera!! The food is really good and is inexpensive to.
For the Shopaholics in you, a short Sky train or Taxi drive away is the Silom Centre which is basically the start of a load of amazing shopping Malls with shops ranging from up market designer to the inexpensive department stores, we spent hours there and could have easily spent days!!
A couple of tips I would give is that before booking any trips speak to the hotel concierge as there were 6 of us in our party and he managed to hire us a mini bus and driver for the day at a very reasonable price. The driver took us anywhere we wanted to go and is basically at your disposal to stay as long as you like where ever you want to go, we found this far better than booking trips which worked out more expensive and are on a fixed timetable.
The other tip is that if you want some good jewellery to take home, on the Silom road before the Holiday Inn is the Jewellery Centre which is massive (Around 5 floors of respectable Jewellery stores). We bought some custom made jewellery from M Kul Gems on the first floor as you walk in. The couple that run this place were really helpful and impartial and nothing was too much trouble.
If I went back to Bangkok, which I probably will one day, I would definitely stay at the Sofitel again as it is in a great location and it was a really good hotel.
