LOVED CALIFORNIA, LOVED THE RESIDENCE INN…
We stayed here between 22 Aug and 6 Sep 08. Upon arrival the front entrance was very appealing, everywhere looked clean, plenty of parking. Reception staff were the friendliest I’ve met during my several years travelling to America. They always greeted with a smile and nothing was too much trouble, although I could say this about all of the staff really.
The rooms were fabulous, again one of the better designs I’ve stayed in. They were a very generous size with kitchenette which included a dishwasher, microwave, oven, toaster, coffee maker, fridge/freezer, cutlery etc.. They also had a separate bedroom (beds very comfortable with ample pillows and bedding), toilet and vanity area, separate seating area with TV, fireplace and dining area. Ample storage was also available (enough for 2 adults and 3 kids). Air conditioning was digital so very easy to operate and not noisy. Any problems reported with the rooms were dealt with very promptly. They were immaculately clean upon arrival and during our stay and provided a very comfortable stay.
The pool area was possibly the only slight downside to this hotel. It’s a 24 hour pool which is great but it wasn’t that warm and due to it being quite a small pool it became too crowded during the busier times. The pool layout however was nice, with the most comfortable sun chairs/beds I’ve ever sunbathed on. Umbrella’s provided for shade and ample tables where you could eat breakfast if you wanted too. There was also a kiddie pool and Jacuzzi.
The breakfast – fabulous! I read reviews before I travelled here that said it got a bit ‘samey’ and that it got busy etc. There was ample seating in the breakfast area, but you could also take your breakfast to one of the surrounding outdoor seating area’s or even back to your room if you wished so although the actual breakfast area may have got a bit busy at times it was never ever a problem. The food quality was excellent, there was a varying choice on each day of bagels, muffins, toast, muffins, waffles (you can make yourself with several machines), bacon, sausage, ham, eggs, French toast, tortilla wraps, choice of 4 cereals, porridge. Fruit juices, cold milk, hot chocolate, coffee and tea were also available. The coffee and tea were also available 24 hours a day.
Other facilities within the hotel included: barbeque area with patio heaters and 2 gas barbeques, mini market supplying beers, fizzy drinks, biscuits, frozen pizza, sandwiches etc. (quite reasonably priced), if the market didn’t provide something you wanted the hotel operated a complimentary shopping service to your room (didn’t use this though), tennis/basketball court, Disney tickets desk, internet connection at a cost of $5 for half hour, managers evenings with snacks (this wasn’t great as not always sure when this would take place and not much choice, it only happened once during our stay and we got a plate of nacho’s and dips).
Local area was really nice, it was right across the road from the new Garden Grove complex which is nice to walk around in the evening. It has shops, bars, take-out restaurants, speciality restaurants etc. It’s still being completed so there will be more to come. Some of the restaurants we visited were Cheesecake Factory which had an extensive menu, meals were huge, very nice atmosphere although seating outside is nicer with patio heater, quite reasonable prices although don’t have kids menu but will do kids versions of some meals. Bubba Gumps was a nice place, great beers and cocktails and again a great menu, service great – you have to display your ‘stop Bubba’ if you want service for drinks etc., and display your ‘run bubba run’ sign if you are ok as you are. California Pizza I was reluctant to try as I thought it would just be pizza, how wrong could I be, again great service and atmosphere and the pizza’s are gorgeous. Also worth a visit are the marble creamy factory for every flavour ice cream you could possibly want and the chocolate factory. The nearest beach recommended to us was Huntingtons beach which was about half hour drive, great beach, great waves, great sun-tan – what more could you want!
Parks we visited included Six Flags (great if you love rollercoasters), Universal and Knotts Berry Farm (this park was fab). We decided not to visit Disney as we’d done so many times in Florida. Also took a trip to Vegas but that was a whole other story….
In conclusion, if you’ve booked this hotel you won’t be disappointed, it’s a great base to enjoy wonderful California. Can’t wait to go again, if I do I’d definitely book the Residence Inn.
