I was pleasantly surprised. I read some reviews from earlier this year and had concerns about our stay. We stayed at the Portofino the first week of June and had a great time. Our room was on the top floor facing away from Katela Ave which is a very busy street. We were also away from the elevator and ice/soda dispensers on our floor.
Contrary to an earlier review, our room was very quiet. I did not hear doors slamming or people in the hall despite the fact we left our A/C off most of the time we were in the room.
The front desk was very responsive every time I contacted them (in person or on the phone) and always sent someone to our room if we needed anything - as compared to other hotels I've been at where they ask you to stop by the front desk to get something.
The room was clean and neat and they did a great job of picking up after us when they did the daily cleaning. The bathroom was clean and the tub/shower had a bowed out curtain which gives you a lot more room. Another bath advantage is that there were two sinks, one in the tub/toilet area and one outside on a vanity area.
I liked the french doors separating the kids area from the adults. They did not block the sound, so don't count on that. There were tvs in each area so we could have grown up and kids shows on at the same time, not that we spent much time watching TV. Our kids (3,6) loved the bunkbeds.
About the only issue I have with the hotel was the dirty floors in the hallways. We are barefoot people and when we walked around in our rooms our feet stayed clean. If I walked down the hall to get ice my feet quickly became blackened.
Regarding negative reviews, I would look at the reviewers history and see if they are one hit wonders or if they have reviewed other properties. I've been a TripAdvisor member for a couple of years now and only review places I have personally stayed.
BTW, if you do book a room I would ask for one away from the elevator.
