First the good: GREAT VALUE, GREAT VIEW and GREAT LOCATION! We had one of the third floor suites and the view was terrific. Nice lobby with dark paneling and oriental vases. The room was spacious and filled with early American antique reproductions. High ceilings (or low floors), four poster king bed and a moveable partition between sitting room and bedroom made our room perfect for four. Separate heating units kept both rooms adequately warm. Location was convenient to the Metro and great restaurants were just steps away. Avoid the Pier 7 restaurant on the ground floor. Far better dining can be had at Philips Seafood Buffet up the street.
The bad: Poorly trained front desk help. Courtesy is everything in the hotel business and polite staff can compensate for a multitude of sins. Every guest deserves a smile and a "good afternoon"....PERIOD! John should not carry on a conversation with his fellow desk clerk while he is trying to check in new guests.
Bad also were the room amenities. "What!...no coffee maker?" Where is the fan in the bathroom? A metal bottle opener attached to the bathroom door jamb gave me a nice gash on my hand. There was no coffee station in the lobby so you were forced to order room service.....which was fast but at a cost. Toasted bagels arrived raw and cold both mornings, and the coffee tasted like Decaf Folgers from a jar. The mattress felt like a trampoline and there was a grand total of ten TV stations (but included Showtime).
And now: the ugly: This hotel appears to have been built in the '70's. No renovations or updates since then are evident other than paint. Wallpaper, carpeting and upholstery appear to be original and are very shabby. There was a 1" cigarette hole in our bedspread and a large stain on the desk chair seat. Bathroom tiles need to be re-grouted as did the entry floor tiles. None of the bathroom electrical outlets had breaker circuits and there was no scold valve in the shower. The water temperature in the shower depended on who flushed the toilet in the next suite.
The owners of this hotel are smart. They know that any significant renovations would have to include bringing the entire hotel up to local building code standards. I strongly suggest they ‘bite the bullet’ and totally rehab the property. It would be well worth it.
