This was my first stay at a B&B. My wife found Kalorama on TripAdvisor and it sounded like a quaint lil’ place. We weighed the options in price and offerings vs. a big chain hotel in D.C. and decided that we’d give this place a try. We were there for four days in mid November of 2005.
Parking is hell, like everywhere in D.C., when trying to unload. But, checking in was pretty much a non-event as we have made a reservation calling several weeks ahead. The house is an old creaky one with lots of wood and a warm feeling. The décor is bland. If you are looking for that cruise ship feeling, this ain’t your place. Our room was on the second floor facing the street. There was a bed, desk, sitting chair, armoire, and a coat hanger (see pic). The bed was comfortable. The sheets and towels were clean. The bathroom is tiny, however (see pic). It’s a struggle for two people to get ready at the same time! But, there was plenty of hot water. There’s no TV or phone in your room. Which was a nice change so as not to be glued to the tube all night. Breakfast a coffee, tea, juices, croissants, toast, bagels, muffins, danishes, and jams, jellies, and PB. We were issued a free parking pass for a spot across the street down a short alley (see pic).
There is much peace and tranquility at Kalorama. With the exception of the staff, I think my wife and I were the only folks who spoke English. I heard German, Japanese, Chinese, and some other Slavic language I didn’t know. Everyone smiled at each other and said hello. That was about it. I would suggest looking into staying on the top floor. There are basement room that looked a bit scary to me. There is a laundry area with a rickety washer and dryer. We didn’t use them. There is also a “common” refrigerator is you have anything you wish to put keep cold. We didn’t use it. It was quite warm in the room. But, in November I was happy that the place wasn’t a drafty old house.
Overall I would say this was a pleasant experience. We will probably look at staying at Kalorama again. It wasn’t spectacular or exciting. But, we weren’t looking for any of that.
