I had a very pleasant stay recently at the Westin Grand in D.C. Admittedly, I was there for a conference and other business so I did not avail myself of the hotel's full range of amenities, however, I thought that the hotel staff was extremely helpful, especially when I arrived at 6:30 am after getting off a red-eye flight. Although check-in wasn't until noon, the front desk staff arranged to find me a place where I could wash up in preparation for an 8:30 meeting, and when an elevator seemed to be stuck at the lobby (a singular occurrence during my three days there), someone escorted me through the hotel's kitchen and up the stairs to my floor.
My room was quiet and well appointed. I especially liked the sumptuous marble and granite that seemed to be featured in the rooms and common areas surrounding the lobby. I did not notice ANY peeling wallpaper, soiled carpets, fading paint or other signs of systematic neglect. The room was clean and spacious enough. I did have a room that faced the back alley. It was not scenic, however, because I was there on business, I wasn't there for the view, and realistically, I don't expect grand views in an urban hotel unless I've specifically arranged for that sort of thing in advance. On the plus side, I was never bothered by outside noises, and certainly didn't hear any ambulances as one reviewer noted.
I did not eat in the Westin's restaurant, however, because I attended a conference there, I did partake in the food set out by the catering staff, which included two sit-down lunches. The food was served hot and tasted fine and the service was quite prompt. I might fault the catering staff slightly on one occasion for not circulating with coffee at the end of lunch, however, the keynote speaker had begun and there's a possibility they wanted to avoid disturbing us during the speech, so, I would give them the benefit of the doubt.
In other respects, the hotel is wonderfully located. I came in on foot from the Metro. The Westin is within walking distance of the Foggy Bottom and Dupont Circle stops. In addition to those areas it's also an easy walk to Georgetown or the southern end of Embassy Row. All told, it seemed like a fine hotel. My experience was not nearly as negative as many of the reviews previously posted.
