Can only agree with so many of the good reviews written about this place previously. Bathroom spotlessly clean and our views on the wet room/lack of shower curtain debate probably changed somewhat after soaking everything in sight on its first use !! Bedroom clean and bright too and being on 9th floor had a bit of a view across the rooftops opposite.
Hotel fairly easy to get to from airport by public transport although locals aghast at the recent hike in transport prices from 20 to 30 Ls !! Friendly, efficient and helpful reception staff let us into our room early and on last day let us leave luggage all day before our evening flight home.
As with other cities in this part of the world I have found the " in your pocket" series invaluable. The Riga one is normally 1.20 Ls but there are complimentary copies available at the infomation desk as you exit departures.
We had chosen Riga for a late Valentine's Day celebration and on the Sunday evening dined at Melnie Muki (Black Monks) 1-2, Jana seta. Fabulous food, amazing choice. It is housed in the remnants of a medieval cloister. Saxophonist playing in backgound, subtle lighting - all very romantic ! Reservations essential. From there went onto the Skyline Lounge (26th floor of Reval Hotel )for cocktails until 2 ish. Yes I know every visitor to Riga goes there but with good reason - the views are fantastic and the cocktails half London prices. We returned the following afternoon and sat for a couple of hours watching the wintry sun go down over the city.
Did stick our heads into Rozengrals medieval restaurant (Rozenza 1). Very authentic looking. Waiters in full period costume. Traditional old dishes (unfortunately not matched by traditional old prices!)
Found the Double Coffee chain excellent for warming drinks and snacks (branches all over the place). Nice little bar (drinks and snacks) - Lidojosa Varde (The Flying Frog) at Elizabetes 31A. Tried the national drink at Rigas Balzams, Torna 4. Even mixed with something else found it incredibly bitter. Lovely cellar bar though. Also Amber Way tavern nearby very nice. Bites Bluzs Klubs bar opposite hotel for late night live music (cover charge).
Did try Paddy Whelans and the Dickens pub out of curiosity (normally avoid such places like the plague). Both empty and soulless. Presumably come into their own more in late evening with visting stag do's.
Only disappointment on eating side of things was Dzirnavas (The Mill), Dzirnavu 76. Billed as being full of happy Latvians gorging themselves on a huge buffet. We went on a Saturday night - about 10 people in what is basically a self service restaurant with a folksy decor. Absolutely no atmosphere. Very cheap though. It is part of the Lido chain. We looked at another one the following day (Vermanitis) which was equally uninspiring.
Most of museums are closed Sunday and Monday but Museum of Occupation is a must. It is fascinating - dedicated to the Soviet and Nazi occupations. Free but donations welcome.
Only regret during our stay is not using the Star bar in the hotel until just before we left. Whilst it cannot boast the views of the Reval it is a very swish place with great music and cockails.
Oh and did I mention the Einstein theme ???
Enjoy.
