Fourth visit to Tallinn and second to this hotel. Arrived a couple of hours before official booking in time but receptionist very helpful and let us into room. Had booked a double but a bit disappointed to be given a small twin room on first floor. We were told that there were no doubles available which I was a bit surprised at in view of how few guests there appeared to be. We were then moved to a large family room (still with twin beds but superb in every other respect) for same price. Pine floors, sofa, armchairs, very clean bathroom and looked freshly decorated.
Breakfast basic but adequate. Food does run out quite quickly but no problem getting more stuff. Dining area quite small which may prove problematic at busier times.
Journey from airport very easy. No 2 bus leaves from outside terminal. You can buy a 10Kr ticket from the R-Kiosk to right of arrivals (15Kr if bought from driver). Depending on time of day and day of week these run max of three times per hour, min of once an hour. After a mile the tramlines appear to your right on Tartu Mnt and you can get off and transfer to a No 2 tram which stops outside the hotel.
Old Town easily explored on foot. It was absolutely delightful wandering around the maze of streets covered in a thin blanket of snow. Lots of bars and restaurants to suit every taste. Personal favourites (bars) included Hell Hunt (Pikk 39) and Karja Kelder (Vaike-Karja 1) a cheap celler bar with a totalitarian coat-check policy at busy times. The Beer House (Dunkri 5) is fun if you like German oompah music! Good beer though - brewed on the premises. The Olde Hansa (Vana turg 1) is another fun experience. This candlelit haunt serves historically authentic medieval fare served by waiting staff in period costume. Medieval chamber music is played live from the minstrels gallery. You must visit thecanopied toilets !!!
Great restaurant is Vanaema Juures (Rataskaevu 10/12) - cosy celler restaurant serving Estonian food. Favourite cafe Kehrwieder (Saiakang 1) - a snug warren of cave-like stone rooms.
I would recommend getting a copy of "Tallinn in your Pocket "(35Kr from the Tourist Information Centre). It gives you the latest info on restaurants, cafes, nightlife, sightseeing, events, etc.
Only sightseeing we did outside town centre was Kadriorg Park and Palace (No 1 tram from outside hotel). We visted Peter the Great's cottage (museum) and the nearby and newly opened Kumu Art Museum.
A great city - looking forward to a fifth visit! Would certainly stay at the Skane again - excellent value.
