Nearly didn't get there at all. Had booked flight with Sky Europe but received e-mail 2 weeks before trip stating that flight had been cancelled. In meantime had booked a non-refundable room deal on Ibis website (very cheap). Fortunately able to get alternative flight with Ryanair - better times and only 10 GBP more.
Hotel is easy bus ride from airport (No. 61) followed by 10 - 15 minute walk frombus/train station. Tickets 18SK from machine at bus stop if you have coins otherwise from information desk in arrivals.
Hotel typical of chain - room basic but clean and tidy, especially the bathroom. Reception staff very friendly and helpful and spoke good English. Only slight issue was the fact that I had booked a twin room on website but ended up having to share a double bed with my brother (well we were always close!!). Trams a bit noisy outside first thing in morning as they screech around the bend by the tunnel under the castle but otherwise fairly quiet. Breakfast extra. I didn't eat there but my brother stated that it was fine - usual fare of bread, juices, cold meats, cheese, etc.
Hotel very well placed for old town - 5 minutes walk. Bars to suit all tastes although all very quiet on the Monday/Tuesday we were there. However I can imagine them being very busy at weekends. Slovak pub, Obchodna 62, big old rambling place with lots of rooms. Cheap beer and popular with students and tourists. Nearby KGB bar at Obchodna 52 good too. Slang and 17 bars on Hviezdoslavovo nam OK. Whilst I wouldn't dream of going into an "Oirish" theme pub back home The Dubliner, Sedlarska 6, busiest and latest opening of places we drank at (0300). Good atmosphere. Lots of ex-pats and locals drinking Guinness at UK prices. Havana Club, Michalska 26, busy with live music and lots of "beautiful" people drinking rum based drinks and smoking cigars ! Greenwich, Zelena 10, classy cocktail joint with live jazz but expensive. Peoples, Gorkeho 1, cool, reasonably priced cocktails but deserted on our visit.
There are also some nice little locals' bars in the street at the foot of the castle (turm right out of the hotel).
Ate at Pulitzer, Zupne nam 7. Busy with local diners but food mediocre and service erratic (given wrong main course). Coffee & Bagel chain good for both. Schokocafe Maximilian, Hlavne nam, excellent for coffee and 27 types of hot chocolate !!
