Recommended. Note: The underground station nearest to this hotel is currently closed. This means travel to the Pest side involves walking across the bridge (min 15 min), taking multiple public transport or paying for a cab. Hence if you are a tourist, you may find other accomodations more suitable unless your get a special deal on this 4* property.
Hotel is located in Buda direct on the Danube River. A high end property, check-in and general service was good. Decore is high style throughout. Rooms are modern, decent size and in general good condition. Bedding was good. Bathrooms are somewhat small, but high style and modern. Plenty of hot water/pressure. Our room was on the 1st floor facing the river. Despite the traffic outside, room noise was minimal. Note: Unless you're on the 3rd or 4th floor, views to the Parliment building are blocked by trees. Breakfast buffet was excellent with numerous hot and cold offerings. Hotel taxi was a fixed Hf 6500 and we were happy to pay, Mercedes cab was there at the appointed time and we encountered no problems.
Tips on Budapest.
Airport - an attended tourist cab stand is directly outside the arrivals hall and the costs Hf 5600 to most destinations in the inner city. The previously touted mini-van service while only Hf 2300 per person, is in un-airconditioned vans and we waited 30 minutes. My advice -- pay for a cab, save time and frustration.
Which side - The Buda side is clearly quiet and with the exception of the Castle area, not much to see, next time, we'd opt to stay in Pest and at any hotel near the Opera.
Restaurants - we visited all of the previously reviewed restaurants near this hotel in Buda. In general, we didn't like the appearance of any of them. Most of the restaurants appeared dirty, not many people or poorly dressed tourists. We ate at the Cafe Pierrot in the Castle district, food/service was excellent though it was pricey. The Goa (near the Opera) appeared excellent, but again, seemed frequented by tourists at higher prices. There is a wonderful pedisterian area near the Opera frequented by locals (the wait staff spoke great English) and we ate in high style in this area several times with wonderful and well priced meals. The new Cafe Noir et L'Or is near the Jewish district. While we didn't dine there, we stopped in at this high style restaurant, the manager gave us a nice tour and we regret not making the trip over for an evening.
Hint. The Castle District is overrun with tourists during the day. After dining at the Cafe Pierrot, still early evening, we enjoyed a wonderful walk in the area free of all crowds, cool summer night and wonderful illumination. Take a cab up one evening if you are not staying in the area.
Hint. The Pariment Building is widely touted as a must see. We got there at 9.40 for the 10 a.m. English tour and got tickets after waiting a short line. The tour consists of 4 rooms and upon exiting the tour, the line to GET tickets went down the street. Get there early. If you encounter a long line, you can safely skip this site, not worth waiting in a long line for.
