This will probably be one of my shorter reviews as I would only be reiterating what so many people have said previously. Hotel fantastic value for money. Kristina could not have been more welcoming and even seemed impressed by the few words of Czech I had learnt ! Soon rumbled after the first sentence though!! Room was spacious and spotless. Faced onto street but not bothered by noise as mentioned in some previous reviews but that was probably more to do with the miles we walked and the twenty or so bars we tried out over the weekend.
Had breakfast at the hotel on the second morning and very good value for 3 euros and taken in lovely bright room. Nothing was too much trouble for Kristina - whatever you wanted to drink and a seemingly endless supply of toasties !!
Very easy to get to by public transport. Bus 100 from airport to Zlicin and then metro to Andel. As you leave train follow signs to bus station as entrances a little way apart. You then come out at the top of Vltavska from where 2-3 minute walk. You can buy a 24 hour ticket at the airport (transport desk) which covers you for this trip and then obvioulsy trams, buses and metro until same time following day. Be warned the ATMs at the airport give out very high denomination notes. However lady at the transport desk seemed completely unfazed when I purchased two tickets with the equivalent of a 60 pound note (couple before us did the same).
City is easy to get about although the cobbles can take their toll after a while !! Did the usual tourist bits i.e. the castle, the old town and Charles Bridge (note that there is building work going on either end at the moment which might spoil your photos a bit). Particulary enjoyed taking the funiculary up Petrin Hill to the tower and then walking round to Strahov Monastery. Great views over the castle and the town. From there pleasant walk down Lorentanska to castle. To prepare yourself for the day would recommend the Downtown cafe, Ujezd, next to funicular for a filling breakfast.
Tried a couple of the beer halls ( u Cerneho vola, Lorentanske namesti 1 and U Zlateho tygra, Hosova 17). Fab if you like beer as I do - not so good if you don't as my partner doesn't although they did manage to rustle her up some vodka at the first place). Favourite cellar bar - St. Nicholas Cafe, Triste 10 - mellow crowd and occasional live music.
After spending whole of second day sightseeing decided to spend the evening locally. Do try a couple of beers in the bar virtually next to hotel (can't remember the name) to get the feel of a local. Also U Buldoka, Nadrazani 46, good for same reason (just don't disturb the sleeping patrons!!). For a meal in nice surroundings would recommend the Grotta, Ostrovskeho 7. This is just up from the bus station and most definitely not the sort of place you would stumble across. Restaurant furnished in style of medieval cellar - brick walls and vaulted ceiling with lots of little alcoves for a romantic meal. Traditional food.Finished evening off with rather too many white russian cocktails in Koncept bar by main shopping mall on Nadrazni.
