I recently stayed at the Crowne Plaza for 3 nights during the school holidays with 2 boys aged 7 & 13. My sister stayed in a separate room booked by myself through wotif.com.
First the positives:
The facilties are fantastic - the indoor pool was particularly useful because it was very very cold (so cold the boys didn't even try the outdoor heated spa). Also too cold & windy for tennis. Gym was beautifully equipped with TV's and state of the art machines & weights.
The one bedroom apartment was ideal. Plenty of space, large bathroom with washing machine & dryer. Tasteful furnishings with nice outlook over pool. Televisions in both the bedroom and the lounge so I could watch different programs to the kids. DVD player in room & in-house movies (too expensive at $15.95)
Being winter the resort felt deserted (which I loved) until a conference group arrived.
The restaurant food was of a very high standard and the staff (Yvonne) especially attentive to our boys. She looked after us well and even organised for our (many) cosmopolitans to be brought up from the downstairs bar.
Now for the "not so positives":
Prior to arriving at the resort I called to ask that my sister be put into an adjoining room or that she be located as close to our room as possible. Upon arrival we found that she had been placed in a completely different wing!! As explained in another review - there are 2 separate buildings and no easy way to get from one to the other. They were more than happy to move her closer but nothing had been noted on the instructions despite my phone call. Her room was still a walk down a long corridor.
We had a late check out arranged (& confirmed) because of being "Priority Club" members however when we got to the room at 1.00 the keys had been de-activated. This would have required another long walk back to reception however one of the housekeepers kindly called reception and some one came down to let us in.
Breakfast was the standard buffet with less than acceptable pastries, However the staff again were very helpful and ordered fresh eggs benedict for us. Each of the 3 mornings when we arrived at 10 (breakfast finished at 10.30) there were no bowls for cereals & cutlery missing from the tables so we had to ask someone to help us. Little things like that can be annoying.
Valet parking is expensive at $20 - and car parking is very limited within the resort. During our stay part of the car park was taken up with a truck and equipment for the conference which meant we also had to park over the road - not very pleasant when it is dark, cold and wet. (We had just returned from Peppers in Port Douglas where the secure undercover parking was free).
Finally, I am a bit reluctant to include this final point but will just to warn people to be vigilant about personal property. Sometime between arriving at the resort and the next day we discovered our portable DVD player missing. We are unsure where it disappeared and do not believe that the staff were any way involved. It just pays to be very careful with your belongings. The bell boy was extremely helpful but had no luck locating it.
The resort is expensive and I think they are trying to charge city prices in a small beach side town.
All in all, we did really enjoy our stay and would stay at the resort again despite some of our reservations.
