“Smelly, dirty and roaches included in an overated room”

Hotel Tropic Banana

Santo Domingo
Dec 30, 2006

OK guys, maybe you want to know my terrible experience at this hotel. My husband and I found in a book that the hotel was a little bit over rated but it was good. First, we reserved a suite for 2 nights. The feeling of something weard would happen started, so we went to check out other hotels in the area, but of course everything decent was fully booked, so we decided to go back.
After we checked in a so called "suite", we were told to change rooms. The french owner said that this room was booked for another people. So, he offered us a "suite" in a new building they are constructing at a price of US$220.00, but due to the inconvenience, he was going to reduce the price to US$180.00.
The 2 story suite had was smelly, the futton downstairs had spots like vomit and the bedspread in one of the beds had spots also.
The bathroom was already used, because I found a cigarrette butt in it. There was no soap, and the pool had a dirty color. So I went to the manager to report it and to ask him to change the bedspread and the cushion on the sofa, etc. After that we went out to check the area.
By the time we came back, nothing happened, so we decided that we were going to spend the night and to return the next morning to Santo Domingo city. During the night I woke up and decided to go downstairs to read a book, well, I had to run away, because a flying roach was almost hitting my face.
I hope you take this into consideration before you decide to book this hotel.
Thanks God we found an excellent restaurant, Paco Cabana: Food excellent, ambience with beds at the beach, everything good. If you decide to take the chance, try the fish and shrimps in coconut milk.

“Changed but Okay”

Hotel Tropic Banana

Jun 16, 2005

I use to know this hotel many years ago. It used to be an awesome place to be because the lobby would always be full of people hanging around the bar, listening to cool jazz world music and just enjoying themselves. It also used to have a restaurant with food that could exceed the likes of fancy restaurants in New York despite the fact that it consisted of just a few tables around a pool with christmas lights on the trees.

When I stayed over there last time the hotel was nothing like that. It was very quiet. It seemed like the only people staying there were my friends and I. (that is not necessarily the hotels fault maybe it was offseason) The lobby area was empty and I never saw the likes of the restaurant that used to be there.

On the lighter side. The staff was very helpful and very nice to us. The hotel looks very cute still. I never had any problems with water. It tended to get hot at night (but that is more of a national electric problem not a hotel problem).

So even though the Hotel Tropic Banana is not what it used to be, it is still a nice quiet hotel to stay in. Plus it is right in the middle of everything and right across the beach!!!!

Great tropical location, freindly multi lingual staff, large rooms with AC, walking distance to many good restaurants and bars - should you not want to eat at the good hotel restaurant........ Some mornings there was no hot water in the shower but that's part of the Carribean! Rates are seasonal and quite resonable. I am looking forward to returning here.....soon!

I have never written a review for a hotel, and airline, or a restaurant. however, I felt compelled to write something after spending five nights at this little hideaway, because it made my dominican christmas vacation. if you can get around the mosquitos and some inconsistency in the water flow... there is nothing i can say bad about this place. The service, the food, and the ambience made this a place that i would return to again, and again after that. You are near everything from additional sweet restaurants (other than the one on the grounds of the hotel), great beaches, clubs, and a little town. The only reason why i didn't want to write this was because i don't want too many more people to know of it's existence!

We spent a month in dominican republic with our 6 months old baby.
our week at the tropic banana was like being right in a small tahitian hotel. the gardens, the pool. Small and intimate, seconds to the beach. this is a memorable time for us and we plan on going back
