The Point B&B is the last house you pass when driving out to the end of the Kaikoura Peninsula, where the seals rest on the rocks, just yards from the parked cars and tourists' cameras. It's small (only 2 guest rooms) and a little bit out of the town but provided you have transport it is only 5-6 mins drive right into the centre and all the restaurants / bars. The benefit is its location a couple of hundred metres from the seal santuary and great walks round the headland.
Rooms are clean and well maintained. The owners run a tiny (by NZ standards) small-holding but keep enough sheep to be able to do sheep shearing demonstrations twice a day through the season! Made to feel very welcome and given free access to the kitchen facilities. Breakfast is included - but is of the cereal / toast type rather than cooked which was a shame and the only reason they didn't get 5 stars. But at £36 (Pound Sterling) a night for a room, you really can't complain too much.
Lovely gardens round the house, and views over the coast line with the Kaikoura (pronounced "Kai-kouda" in Maori!) mountains in the background. Great place to base yourself while doing the whale watching (totally fantastic trip, worth every cent) etc that the town is renowned for. Bookable through their own website [--] and highly recommended as good value, clean, well maintained house with nice owners.
