“Great location but needs refurbishment”

Travelodge Wellington Plimmer Towers

3 of 5 stars

The hotel is in a great position - you just walk down Plimmer steps and you are in the centre of Wellington.

The interior is dated and needs some tlc but it is ok.

Parking is available but at $25 a day.

The main problem we found was the problem that all Copthorne hotels seem to have - poor service in the restaurants. We ate there one night. The food was fine but hardly and people in and snail-paced service, so we ate out after that.

All in all an ok place to stay for a couple of nights.

“20+ years old, no refurbishment...”

Fist of all the reception is hidden away on one of the middle floors. First impression of the reception counter...It had that feel of late 1970's about it. Cracked ceiling panels worn out counter with old style key piggeon holes on the back wall. I thought to my self, here we go...:-) They use the old style keys and keyrings so they gave us these codes for accessing the floors. This system is so unreliable it took us about 10 minutes to manage to get to the desired floor. I entered the room and thought to my self, is it possible that there are rooms like this still out there. You could see the numerous layers of paint have been slapped onto all surfaces and the bathroom looks like something out of a Hitchcock movie. There were small collonies of mould in every corner of the bathroom. You could tell that thousands of people have been through here. The bed was shocking...it was completely destroyed by previous occupants, plus I couldn't sleep all night due to the heat in the room since there is (check this out) no air conditioning or ventilation available. There is a small 1970's heater on the wall though!!! It almost makes me laugh right now, but trust me I wasn't feeling great after that night, especially considering that I had an all day meeting the next day. The breakfast was O.K. although my poached eggs were cooked solid. Cheers Copthorne...never again!

“Central location, close to te Papa, shops and pubs”

Good accommodation, as one would expect from a Copthorne. We booked last minute and got a suite for a third of the listed price.

Getting in and out of hotel can be a nuisance due to security features (have to enter code in lift and use intercoms out of hours). Copthorne parking spaces poorly labelled, meaning that many people park in the more expensive Wilson parking by mistake.

“Awww come on, - this hotel is fine!”

Oh please! These terrible reviews are clearly from people who want five star but can't or wont afford it!

Granted I wasn't expecting great things from this hotel - as it is an older building - but quite honestly I was pleasantly surprised.

I was there for a weekend seminar and found it a lovely inner city retreat from 'racking my brains' all day at lectures.

My check-in was easy, the staff were lovely and helpful. When i got to my room I was prepared to be disappointed - but instead, was pleasantly surprised. It's true the hotel was not built last year, but my room was extremely clean and absolutely huge. I had a standard room which was comparable to what many hotels call a mini suite - with a bedroom and lounge area (open plan). It had a bath (which I didn't expect), broadband, satellite tv, minibar and a dinky washing line you could pull out over the bath!

I searched wotif.com could a good deal and paid 125NZD for the room with full buffet breakfast - which was very nice.

The best thing about this hotel is the great service - clean rooms, yummy well priced room service food and friendly staff.

It is also close to everything, courtney place, Te Papa, waterfront, shopping and not too far from Westpac Stadium.

I think many of these current reviews have been somewhat harsh, and if anybody has a problem at this hotel should contact reception as they will go out of their way to accommodate you.

For example, I requested a non-smoking room - which I got, but someone had clearly been smoking in it - ewwwww (for us non-smokers - no offence to those who do smoke - as I am a reformed smoker myself - and I completely understand what it means to be 'in' the habit).

I called reception and they had me moved to another room in 5 minutes flat!! You can't ask for better than that.

So if you are considering this hotel for price and location - I can promise you that you will be pleasantly surprised by the space of the rooms, the quality of foot and friendly service.

“Avoid if possible”

Travelodge Wellington Plimmer Towers

Apr 13, 2007

We had the misfortune to spend three nights here. Since we had prepaid thru an agency we did not move out. Our one bedroom suite was not clean, not well maintained, noise came in from the hall and the wind whistled thru the windows. It is confusing to enter and exit as reception is on the 7th floor with rooms on 10 and above. One night we thought to exit after 6PM and got caught in a maze of closed shops with locked exit doors. Luckily a man was leaving work and showed us the trick to exit. Now that we are home the upset has increased as we found we paid over $300 a night for this experience.
