I stayed at the Hyatt Regency Auckland (HRA) the first and last nights of my visit to Auckand in mid-March 2007. I used points for free stays both nights and, after having stayed in the two different types of room available in the hotel wing -- as fellow travellers have noted, the HRA also has a newer and apparently much nicer tower with residence-like suites -- the best I can say about the HRA's hotel rooms is that they're a good value if you don't have to pay to stay in them.
Actually, the rooms -- I stayed in one regular room, on the 10th floor, and one Club room, on the 11th floor -- were reasonably comfortable and had the basic features that one expects in a 4-star hotel belonging to one of the big higher-end chains. Both rooms were fairly small -- less than 30m2 -- but adequate for single travellers or couples. As others have noted, the HRA's rooms are pretty tired and in need of an extreme makeover. My regular room, while clean, had worn furniture, carpets, and bathroom fixtures. The bed, however, was comfortable and of a good (queen) size. The Club room I had was a bit better and not as worn-out as my regular room had been. The Regency Club, to which one has access if you're in a Club room, is attractive and well stocked with drinks and snacks -- and with good city views -- and thus makes it all the harder to return to one's faded room.
Otherwise, I found the HRA to be a decent hotel overall. Staff were efficient and pleasant, about what one would expect, but not as friendly or polished as staff in Hyatt's high-end Grand or Park hotels.
The best feature of the HRA, other than the Regency Club, is the pool and spa facility, which appears to be almost new and probably built at the same time as the HRA's residence tower. The pool is very nice, a full 25m, and while outdoors, is covered and flanked by a large whirlpool, sauna, and steam room.
As far as I could tell from the hotel's website, regular pricing for the newer suites and the older hotel rooms is fairly close, so I would advise potential guests to look closely at the photos and descriptions of all available options and book -- or not -- accordingly. Personally, I wouldn't spend much, if anything to stay in the tired old rooms.
