We were looking for a real getaway for Easter this year - somewhere far from the crowds, but with enough to keep us busy during the days. This place gave us that and more. Set in its own valley retreat about 12kms out of Port Douglas, Mai Tai is run by a couple of guys who are clearly out to ensure that their guests enjoy a totally relaxed break. Each of the four suites are private, complete with their own walled-in garden, whilst the swimming pool comes complete with a view. The fact that this resort is set in its own 10 acre valley means that the only real noise is from the bird life which surrounds it.
To be greeted at the door by Anthony and Andre's two Bernese Mountain dogs (Eros and Tara) just completed the experience (if you've never met a Bernese, you're in for a treat!).
The guys are happy to suggest things to do, although to be honest, you're spoilt for choice here - from self-guided tours, to 4WD trips into the Daintree, to snorkeling or diving on the reef. It's not difficult to fill the days. But returning to Mai Tai in the evening, having a late night swim (pool's open all hours) or relaxing in the Balinese grounds rounds it off perfectly.
Be warned, though, that the trip to Port Douglas is at least a 15 minute drive (although transfers are available for $30 one way), so if you are planning a meal/drink, you'll need a designated driver! Port Douglas itself is charming, with several very good restaurants (and one stand out - the Nautilus).
Overall, this is a standout retreat for those who just want to get away from it all. Highly recommended.
