“A true break from it all”

Mai Tai Resort

4 of 5 stars

We were looking for a real getaway for Easter this year - somewhere far from the crowds, but with enough to keep us busy during the days. This place gave us that and more. Set in its own valley retreat about 12kms out of Port Douglas, Mai Tai is run by a couple of guys who are clearly out to ensure that their guests enjoy a totally relaxed break. Each of the four suites are private, complete with their own walled-in garden, whilst the swimming pool comes complete with a view. The fact that this resort is set in its own 10 acre valley means that the only real noise is from the bird life which surrounds it.
To be greeted at the door by Anthony and Andre's two Bernese Mountain dogs (Eros and Tara) just completed the experience (if you've never met a Bernese, you're in for a treat!).
The guys are happy to suggest things to do, although to be honest, you're spoilt for choice here - from self-guided tours, to 4WD trips into the Daintree, to snorkeling or diving on the reef. It's not difficult to fill the days. But returning to Mai Tai in the evening, having a late night swim (pool's open all hours) or relaxing in the Balinese grounds rounds it off perfectly.
Be warned, though, that the trip to Port Douglas is at least a 15 minute drive (although transfers are available for $30 one way), so if you are planning a meal/drink, you'll need a designated driver! Port Douglas itself is charming, with several very good restaurants (and one stand out - the Nautilus).
Overall, this is a standout retreat for those who just want to get away from it all. Highly recommended.

“Wonderful honeymoon experience”

Mai Tai Resort

5 of 5 stars
Cleveland
Mar 3, 2008

My husband and I stayed there for part of our honeymoon in Australia. We stayed for 3 nights after a very long flight from the states and it was a great place to just relax and do nothing. Even though the weather wasn't great, we had a great time on our outside patio, at the pool and hanging out in our room . Andre and Anthony we're great hosts, with a big movie collection so even when it was raining we were quite content.

The resort really is up in the mountains, which really makes it beautiful, but if you are like us and uncomfortable about driving on the opposite side of the road, then make sure you factor in transportation costs as they can add up. Expect to pay $60 average for a cab one way to or from Port Douglas. Andre and Anthony were very accommodating and offered us rides when they were going into town, but for dinner the resort is really out of the way if you don't have a car. We didn't mind because we purposely split up our stay in Port Douglas with a couple days in the mountains and some in town, but it would be hard to stay longer than a couple days without a car.

We really loved our stay and we will stay again if we are ever back in Port Douglas. Spend the extra money for the outside shower, it truly is a unique experience and was a great honeymoon memory.

“Brilliant hide-away”

Firstly, I have to say that my partner & I did not stay at the resort. We found it during a stay at Port Douglas and were looking for a retreat for later this year. We were referred to Mai Tai by our friends.

We went up to the resort and were warmly welcomed by both Anthony and Andre, who were gracious enough to provide us with refreshments after showing us around. This is a totally amazing place to stay. private and secluded, the most perfect place to relax and unwind.

The rooms are stunning with an incedible attention to detail. As for the surroundings, words simply cannot say how beautiful they are. One of the advantages for us is the presence of two beautiful dogs, Tara & Eros. We felt totally at home.

In any event, we went back to have dinner with Anthony and Andre along with some friends and we have booked a 3 week stay with them simply because the resort is so beautiful and the hosts are brilliant, unlike the impersonal and fake welcome offered by other so called resorts.

“Paradise Found”

Mai Tai Resort

5 of 5 stars
South Australia
Feb 10, 2008

My husband, Kelvin and I are from Adelaide, and were looking for a quiet, secluded, "out of the rat race" resort somewhere around Port Douglas. We found our paradise at Mai Tai, a Balinese style boutique retreat.

Our two wonderful hosts, André and Anthony were fantastic, nothing was too much trouble and they went out of their way to help us with our plans. Oh, André, those perfect breakfasts under the verandah overlooking the rainforests, tablelands and out to the sea!

We purchased a 7 night “Island and Rainforest Package” through Mai Tai which included 3 nights at Green Island and 4 nights at Mai Tai Resort. Anthony was so helpful ensuring that we had the best of both worlds. Green Island was first on our list and it was a great way to start our break, snorkeling the barrier reef, relaxing by the pool, the beach and in our luxurious Reef Suite.

On our return to Cairns from Green Island, waiting from Mai Tai, was one of our hosts, Anthony to chauffer us to our exotic hideaway, nestled on a mountain in the rainforest about 10 minutes drive from Port Douglas. On arrival we were met by our other host, André and together they made us feel right at home. There are four luxurious suites at Mai Tai and our beautiful “Orchid Suite” was stunning and included a private outdoor shower set amongst the luscious rainforest and beautifully manicured gardens.

Our package at Mai Tai included breakfast each day which was a perfect start, including delicious homemade mango jam whipped up by the very talented Anthony! The ultimate 4WD safari tour with Neville from Gary’s Safari to Cape Tribulation venturing through the magnificent world heritage listed Daintree Rainforest and a cruise along the Daintree River was a wonderful way to experience this treasured part of beautiful far north Australia. Cooling off under local waterfalls, an absolute treat. Our hosts were delightful and assisted us in organising things like, car hire, restaurants, tours and even the hot rocks massage which we enjoyed by the pool surrounded by rainforest and local birdlife.

Kelvin and I say thank you to Anthony and André for their warmth and friendship extended during our stay and it is a credit to you both for all your hard work in developing Mai Tai into such a beautiful boutique retreat. It leaves the other “resorts” for dead!

“What not to like?”

Mai Tai Resort

Feb 2, 2008

Andre and Anthony could not be more welcoming and accommodating, and in a small property this takes on added significance. The tranquil setting alone is an antidote to the hassles of traveling. Mind you, this is not a resort in today's vernacular, and this is what we loved about it. An oasis of calm, away from the busyness of Pt. Douglas itself yet not remote, you can truly relax here, whether after a day of sightseeing or simply to unwind with a good book. The ever present genial hosts will book excursions or a table in one of the many excellent nearby restaurants (don't miss Mojo's in Mossman, a few kilometers down the road for wonderful seafood) and are a fount of knowledge. Make no mistake, if you want to be spritzed by a pool attendant or seek over-the-top opulence, this is likely not for you. Yet this hideaway more than compensates with its mesmerizing views of sugar cane fields and the shimmering sea in the far off distance, its sense of homeyness and a cosseting feeling that comes from the unmistakable impression you're a welcomed guest in the private residence of a close friend. Needless to say, we loved it!
