I first stayed at this hotel back in the 80's when it was the Beaufort. Then it became the Carlton and I continued staying here. Then in 2003 it was re branded as Holiday Inn Esplanade.
This property has a great location overlooking parklands and Darwin Harbour.
When it was opened it was certainly "the" place to stay in town and was worthy of 5 star status. Nowadays I would say its a good 3 - 4 star.
Since its branding as Holiday Inn, some minor upgrading has taken place. New bed linens, a small gym and the opening of a new restaurant that overlooks the great pool. However its time for major work. The furniture in the rooms has not changed since the 80's, therefore they look tired and dated. Bathrooms are dark and not well lit.
Same goes for things such as carpets in the hallways and tiling by the pool.
This hotel could once again be the best in town if good money was spent to take it back to its former glory.
