This was our second trip to Sydney. Previously we had stayed at a B&B in Coogee. So we knew that a serviced apartment on top of the Bondi Junction bus station was a no-brainer in terms of location. At $32 per person, Sydney's seven day bus and ferry travel pass must be among the best travel deals anywhere. We cannot recommend this location highly enough. As other reviewers have noted, the apartments are located across the road from one of the biggest shopping centres in the Eastern Suburbs, so everything you need is right on your doorstep. It's less than 10 mins by bus to Bondi Beach and 30-40 mins to Circular Quay depending on traffic.
We stayed for six nights in a two bedroom apartment on the sub-penthouse level. Based on the noise comments on this site, we had specifically requested a room as high up in the buidling as possible. Management obliged, but even on the 19th floor the street noise was still loud, with the buses coming and going all night.
The apartments themselves were a bit of a disappointment, as we found them to be a little too "hotel-like" in terms of appointment and management. Any place that gives you just one spare toilet roll per bathroom, and expects you to make it last a week, will never get a five star rating from this reviewer! For our liking, the beds were too soft and so we had sore backs atfter a few nights sleep. Other minor gripes included the lack of supplies needed for the length of our stay (the aforesaid toilet paper, dishwashing powder, washing up liquid), rip-off pricing for internet access, lack of clothes hangers, and the awful smell in the reception area.
Although the apartments are "non-smoking," occupants are allowed to smoke on the enclosed balconies. Unfortunately the previous occupant of our apartment must have been a smoker. It took about 3 days with the windows open before the stink of smoke on the balcony had subsided to a level at which we felt comfortable sitting there.
Other reviewers have noted all the "rules" that guests are inundated with, and indeed we made sure to hang onto our room keys for dear life lest we lose them and have to pay the $100 penalty. As older travellers, we were glad of the "no noise, no party" policy. However, one of our fellow travellers was hard of hearing, so we were a little anxious that if we turned the TV up too loud we would be assessed the penalty "without notice" as management had threatened. But all's well that end's well, as we did not seem to be "fined" for anything we did!
The pool and hot tub were very nice and most mornings we were the only people there. We understood that there were fitness facilities in the other building, but we did not use them.
In summary, if you want to relax in your own space, cook your own meals, and not be hassled by room and maid service, the Meriton Bondi Junction would be a good choice.
