May 14-16 2008 was my second stay at hotel 59. (The first being April 2007) It's a clean well appointed hotel not far from the center of Sydney (Walkable to the Opera House, Australian Museum, Darling Harbour, Hyde Park, etc, etc.)
As for those that are wary of the area. I've never had any problem. It's on a main street, the bus stop is a block and a half away, the train about 3. Personally I'm from NY, and there's nothing that makes me nervous in this area. No one has ever bothered me for any reason (I'm African-American), nor did anyone bother my friend (she's Caucasian). Last year I stayed here by myself, this time with someone else, and I find the neighborhood eclectic and interesting.
George is very helpful and kind. The food is delicious! My favorite is the banana shake and the mushroom and tomato breakfast. Even if you're not staying here, drop by for a meal and if you like the company.
Would I stay here again. Sure thing.
The rooms are small but comfortable, with phone, TV, and refrigerator, a nice hot shower, and you feel safe. For the that's key.
