We are a family a four from Stoke-on-Trent and all of us enjoyed our stay here. The views from the hotel were breathtaking and were lovely to wake up to. The staff were all efficient and friendly If you were Homer Simpson you'd absolutely gorge on breakfasts and dinners with the all-you-can-eat fayre. If you like food brought to you on a silver platter, however, this place isnt for you. As I'm akin to the previously mentioned Homer, I found the self-service aspect to the meals rather refreshing. The choice of food was astounding and the quality excellent. The most appealing aspect of the dinners was the "drink however much wine you want to" from the self-service drinks machine. Either red or white, both were quite satisfactory.
Children could drink still or fizzy water, cola or fanta.
Entertainment by the pool was on three nights a week at about 8:30pm till about 10:30pm, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
We found 2 of these entertainers quite acceptable but one, the Friday one, I think, was somewhat mediocre but it helped pass the time away while we were playing cards on the terrace by the pool.
There were 2 pools (3 if you were in San Pietro which was very, very nice), the lower pool by the main restaurant was rather cold (watching people getting into it became a spectator sport - jump in at your peril - but was refreshing when the temperature was in the 30s it certainly helped cool you down after getting out and evaporating beside it.
We didn't have air conditioning in our rooms but don't let that put you off, who needs sheets and blankets anyway when its so warm at nights.
Yes the walk back was arduous. Yes you certainly walked off a few calories (but believe me thats not a bad thing if, like me, you eat like Homer Simpson).
Limone was a beautiful resort, much less commercialised than locations further south on Lake Garda (such as Sirmione or Garda). Malcesine is only a short distance across the Lake and the cable car ride to the top of Monte Baldo (1800m) is a must.
For both children and adults alike (there were very young children there) Hotel Cristina rates as one of the best hotels I've experienced. It wasn't overly expensive but I can't wait to visit there again.
Be warned if you hire a car though, Italian roads are extremely narrow - even the Autostradas - and can be quite a shock to drivers used to wider roads. But if you're prepared for that it doesnt come as quite a shock.
Thank you Hotel Cristina and its staff for a lovely holiday.
