We travel to Norway at least once a year and always stay overnight at Gardermoen the night before we leave Norway. We have stayed at the old Gjestegård hotel, and it was your basic, 2 star budget hotel. It was kinda of charming in an old fashioned way, and I thought the rooms were more than accommodating in a very basic needs kind of way. I would compare it to the travel lodge's that you find along the motorways in Britain. Of all of the hotels in the Gardermoen area, the Gjestegård hotel is one of only 2 hotels that has rooms to accomodate a party larger than 2. We have 2 kids, but don't want to split up into 2 rooms. Norway is extremely expensive and a budget hotel in Norway is the same price as an upscale hotel in the US would. We were pleasantly surprised when we showed up at the new and improved Gjestegård with 2 tired and grumpy kids. The people checking us in were extremely helpful, quick, and pleasant. We checked into the room and were met with 2 twin beds, with pull down bunk beds over the twin beds. My kids FLIPPED out! How cool that was, and what a great distraction from their travel weary nagging. The new rooms are very modern, with a flat panel LCD television screen on the wall, these ultra modern beds, and the typical ultra comfy, clean white fluffy Scandinavian bedding. The bathrooms are roomier in the new hotel, and the shower now has a door which is nice to keep the water off of the floor. Although the room was small, the layout was very well thought out with more than enough room to stow away bags and still be able to move around without feeling crammed in or claustrophobic. My only complaint at all is that there are no restaurants around the hotel so we had to eat dinner there. The dinner for my husband and I was 500 NOK which is a lot of money when you are using the USD. The food was just not that great, and they did not have a lot of vegetarian options. My son and I are vegetarian, and we don't usually have a problem. The breakfast wasn't all that great either, although it's included in the price of the hotel so I can't complain too much. My advice to you, the traveler would be to bring some food in with you from the airport of where ever you're coming from to avoid the over priced and extremely mediocre dinner.
I was overall extremely pleased with this new and improved Hotel Gjestegård. I know that we will stay there again in the future, actually, I'm sure that my boys will insist on it!
