“Charming Hotel in the Medevial City”

Hostellerie le Beffroi

5 of 5 stars
St. Louis
Nov 30, 2007

My husband and I stayed here recently for two nights on vacation. This is an absolutely wonderful place to stay... full of charm and really makes you feel like you're in the French countryside. I believe the original hotel was actually built in the 15th century, the hotel has all the charm, without being kitschy, but very clean with a modern bathroom and refrigerator (complete with wineglasses and a corkscrew!)

We stayed in low season, and the room rates were extremely reasonable at about 74 euro a night for a double. Our room had a gorgeous view overlooking the 'new' part of Vaison la Romaine. The staff spoke English very well, and they were more than helpful during our stay.

Parking is a bit of a challenge... negotiating our car up the medevial town's windy streets was a bit of a challenge, but this is one of the few hotels that really lets you experience the best part of this charming town, and also offers free parking. As is the norm we found in most of France, breakfast is not included in the rate either.

The stairs are definitely a challenge with suitcases, but we were offered assistance carrying them up. Common areas are beautiful - and we really enjoyed the town as well. Great area to base out of for wineries and daytrips into other areas of Provence with a car.

We'd definitely stay again, and hope to in the near future.

We have just returned from 6 fantastic nights staying at this unique little hotel atop a hill in the medievil part of Vaison la Romaine in the French Provence. We had 2 rooms, as we were a party of 2 mums with 2 16 year old daughters doing a 4 week "girls trip" to France. A truly wonderful location and the Beffroi is ancient, rustic and highly appealing. A hidden terrace pool is behind magnificent wooden doors down the cobbled street from reception. A fantastic find! Don't expect straight walls, carpeted stairs and flat floors, this establishment dates back to 15th and 16th century with 2 grand homes from both eras being converted into a charming hotel. There is some car parking, but best to drive up the narrow road and thru the arch and tunnel only when arriving with luggage and leaving. Can park down the hill otherwise and walk the 5 min up. Restaurant is good, but we tended to walk to other local choices which were less expensive. Use VLR as a base and visit Arles, St. Remy, Le Baux and Avignon from here. Staff were all wonderful and helped with the dreaded bags! ( no lift) Make sure you stay on a Mon night and hit the market on Tues in the lower town. Best one in France!

“Georgeous French Medieval Experience”

Hostellerie le Beffroi

Aug 14, 2007

Australians looking for a fabulous French experience, this is it... However, there is a price for everything in life isn't there? Agree with previous reviewer the room at the top of the tower has the most fabulous view. BUT the clock tower is right outside the wide opening
windows. The bell tolls before and after the hour. So don't plan this stay if you're tired. The stairs are not for the frail or unfit either. Charming spacious room, very comfortable and homely. Not sure about the painting over the fireplace of someone being eaten alive by crows, religious significance perhaps?

This is a lovely medieval town, a fabulous experience. The hotel has a terrific pool but its location is not obvious, you need to ask. Didn't get to the restaurant because we forgot to book and it is popular. However, the town has other good options and being in town for market day is a worthwhile. The ruins are amazing and worth the visit.

“Could It Be More Charming?”

Hostellerie le Beffroi

You will see from some of our photos that the previous reviews are correct when saying that you need a small car to navigate the slippery, cobblestone lanes in the historic quarter. My husband loves driving through stuff like this. Hostellerie le Beffroi was the perfect choice for the town of Vaison la Romaine. The historic quarter is medieval, charming and picture postcard perfect at every turn.

The hotel is well maintained and the staff very friendly. Our room was large and overlooked the fountain directly out the front door. We went to sleep with the windows open listening to the water and not much else as there is no traffic.

Parking is also interesting as the spots under the arbor are narrow and vehicles double park. Once again, I was grateful we had a small car. The public salon is meticulously decorated. The breakfast room looked very pleasant but we passed on breakfast at the hotel as 24 Euro for two seemed a little pricey. There are several cafes in town for a continental breakfast.

The most enjoyable part about staying at Le Beffroi was the overall complete experience from driving the narrow lanes, to spending the night in the quiet historic district to listening to the fountain below. We very much enjoyed our stay.

“Highlight of our trip to France”

Hostellerie le Beffroi

My sisters and I spent four charmed days staying at Le Beffroi in September. We had a large triple room (The Ouveze) in the adjacent building and a stunning view over the pool and down the hillside into town. LOVED IT HERE!! The staff was fun and friendly. There is a PC for guest use next to the front desk, and a night cap in the lovely, flowery sitting area is a pleasant way to end the evening.

The town of Vaison la Romaine was friendly and welcoming. We quickly made friends and felt like locals for our short stay. The only suggestion I have is that you do not attempt to drive anything but a small car through the tight tunnel up the hill to the hotel. We had a very narrow escape, but the person just after us was not so lucky. The market day in Vaison was fantastic.
