“OK but not a counrty house hotel”

Careys Manor

3 of 5 stars
Four Marks, ALTON, UK
Jan 15, 2008

Stayed for 24 hr period lunch-time to lunch-time for a Seminar. Room was booked for me by the Company. On arrival followed the signs to the main Car Park and then discovered that there was a bit of a walk to reception. Guest with any luggage would be well advised to park in the Reception Car Park to unload any luggage prior to re-positioning the car to the main Car Park. Reception was quiet and I was dealt with efficiently and with charm. I was disappointed to learn later that although I was a delegate I had been charged (highly) for the coffee I requested whilst I waited for my colleagues to arrive.
My room was in the Garden Wing again a long walk from reception. It was quite small for a double but OK for one person, 2 people would have felt a little cramped. There was a balcony overlooking the garden. Along the lines of many mid-range chains the room appeared to have been recently refurbished with good quality furnishings and a nice modern bathroom. Water pressure for the shower was good.
Meals were nice with attentive service, breakfast in particular was very tasty. I did not use the Spa but I am informed by colleagues that it is very good.
This hotel was fine for the purpose of our visit, no complaints at all. If however I had been expecting a country house type hotel with spacious grounds and rooms with individual character I would have been a little dissapointed.

“Fantastic autumn break in New Forest”

Fabulous stay. Great staff. Loved the spa - authentic thai massage and loads of hydrotherapy rooms. Food at the Thai restaurant and French bistro also delicious. Particularly good if you travel without a car as there is a discount on your stay and on cycle hire and complementary pick-up from the station. But still very close to the town's amenities and you can walk straight into the Forest. Highly recommend.

“Excellent on So Many Levels”

Careys Manor

Booked this hotel when searching for spa breaks online. Found that the spa and cycle break offered by careys Manor was very good value for money. £370 per head for 2 nights accomodation, breakfast and dinner on both days, access to all areas of the spa and gym, a treatment worth up to £100, a mind and body class, lunch in the Thai restaurant on one of the days and cycle hire on the other day to explore the new forest.
I was quite apprehensive having read a few recent bad reviews so was expecting to be dissapointed. I was wrong. Whatever had been the matter has obviously been sorted out. The Garden room was reasonably basic but the beds were very comfortable and the television was large with sky television. The food in the mannor restaurant was so impressive that I kept having to ask questions to the head waiter to try and re-create dishes at home. I have eaten in a some of the finest restaurants and this was up there with them. For £35 pounds per head for three courses (although ours was included in the price,If i lived nearby I would come all the time) it represented seriously good value for money with really attentive but unobtrusive service. The spa was a delight with many relaxation rooms with plentiful up to date magazines and a constant supply of green tea. The treatments were mind blowing probably because they are performed by Thais girls who are over on work placements. ( I had the Sen signature massage) I thought that I had been lucky with the girl who did my massage (she had such strong hands) but my mother reported that she had been equally impressed. It was the best massage I had ever had with an electric massage bed for different height ajustments etc.
All in all it was such a fab break. we have decided to make it our regular break destination. There are so many things to do in the area and we just loved it.

“Somewhat disappointed but lovely spa”

Careys Manor

Booked a weekend break at Carey's Manor mainly because of spa facilities which were lovely. However, hotel on the whole is looking a little shabby and we thought the breakfasts were poor. Hot food is mostly a help yourself buffet which was very tired and the fish we ordered from the kitchen was off. The rooms are not well insulated for noise, we could hear conversation from the room next door. The rooms are very average considering the price. One small thing which niggled was that the duvet was barely big enough for the bed and when
we asked for a blanket we were told the hotel doesn't have any blankets. Also, the safe had been removed from the room due to a malfunction. The main spa facilities were gorgeous but only the swimming pool and basic sauna, steam room and jacuzzi are included in the rate. A supplement has to be paid to be able to use the hydrothereapy pool and nicer sauna and steam facilities. We felt the hotel was not very good value at all considering the price of the rooms in comparison to the quality.
