“Hotel before and after Hurtigruten voyage”

Neptun Hotel

Jun 14, 2007

My husband and I stayed at the Neptun for one night before and one night after our voyage on the Hurtigruten Coastal voyage. The Hotel is situated a few minutes walk from the shops and the fjord.

On the first visit we were surprised to have an outward facing suite on Floor 6 for a one night stay but felt it was very tired and needed a thorough update. Bathroom was particularly in need of attention.

We arrived close to midnight and found the male Receptionist friendly and helpful.

On the second visit, we had an outward facing standard room on the fifth floor. Again we felt the room needed updating. The hair dryer was held together with tape for instance.

Check in was rapid but we found the female receptionist particularly unhelpful when asking for advice regarding an excursion. Staffing levels appeared too low on Reception to cope with demand.

Other guests appeared to have problems relating to lack of a recorded booking in the car park and secondly an apparent attempt to change twice for car parking.

Breakfast was adequate but there were no apparent signs pointing to the breakfast room which could only be reached by stairs and not by lift.

We ate in the cafe bar on our final evening and found wine prices even more excessive than in general in Norway - circa £10 for a glass of wine. But the food was very good. We did not sample the "famous" restaurant.

Would we stay again? No I don't think so. Other people on the same trip spoke highly of the Strand Hotel.

“Nicest staff ever”

The front desk staff were the nicest people I have ever encountered in my various travels around the world. The public areas had lots of interesting art. The room was a little small (as is typical for a European single) and it was not air conditioned (which is generally not a problem for Bergen, but was this past July), but overall it was an excellent stay.

“Much nicer than it looks”

We stayed here in September - very close to the port - 5 mins from historic Bryggen the hotel is basically a business hotel but also runs cooking weekends. Good comfortable rooms Full of high quality modern art the hotels is better than the average business stop. We did not try the main restaurant but the coffee shop Pascal and Vin was very good - fresh food well cooked if a little pricey. The only hotel I've found that tells you that its exchange rate is higher than the banks but if you must it will change money for you! Breakfast gets crowded beyween 8 and 9.30

“Memorable in so many little ways”

Hotel Neptun, Bergen.

Before and after our 11-night Hurtigruten voyage from Bergen we stayed at the Neptun. The first two-night stop was fairly pleasant. We had an inside room (312) decently decorated and comfortably furnished, but with insufficient cupboard/drawer space for a stay of any length. Its outward-opening door (on to the corridor) was rather novel (movie buffs will recall Fred McMurray using one to hide from Edward G Robinson in that fine thriller, “Double Indemnity”). There was a nicely equipped en-suite with plenty of towels, etc. Room was somewhat stuffy though – to get any air required opening windows which then admitted a fair amount of noise. Breakfast was OK – buffet-style -nothing to write home about, but adequate and filling. There is a mini-bar in every room, but with prices in the stratospheric range, it may be unwise to indulge.
On our return visit (following the voyage) we were given an outside room on the fifth floor (526) which, though it could boast an inward opening door, turned out to be in sore need of renovation. In truth it was more tired than we were, which was lucky in a peverse kind of way because we were rudely awoken - twice – once by a call from the desk at 4.20am to ask what time we were leaving that day. (dark sense of Norwegian humour, perhaps?). And again, at 6.30am, this time by an unusual fluttering sound from below our window which, astonishingly, turned out to be an oriental gentleman standing on a path below practicing juggling skills with a ridged-paper parasol on which he balanced and then spun various objects. I was tempted to throw a few coins - but decided against because at that time of the morning I didn’t think I had the strength to project them with sufficient force to persuade him to return from whence he came.
Plus points: The hotel is centrally located.
Minus points:Stuffy rooms. Lifts out-of-order on the morning we left. Unsolicited early-morning call. Oriental jugglers.
Conclusion: The Neptun boasts a four-star rating – grudgingly, we’d give it two and a half.
Recommendations: Take earplugs. Don’t plan on staying for more than a couple of nights at most. Learn a few Chinese insults – just in case.

This was an excellent hotel. The room was spacious, clean. The hotel is in a good location. They have nice artwork throughout the hotel and good breakfasts. The bathroom was huge and really nice with heated floors!
