I stayed at the Electra Palace for a total of 4 nights (2+2) at the end of August 2006. Overall I think the hotel has a good price/comfort ratio, I would definitely recommend it to friends and if I were to visit Athens again I would strongly consider returning there.
I think that it is paramount that you book a room with the Acropolis view, I bet the experience is much worse in the other rooms without the view. Most of the beauty of the hotel lies in its perfect location, one because it is in the middle of Plaka although in a quiet side street, but also because of the perfect views of the Acropolis (great sunsets).
The lobby is very nice, with classic decor. I can see why some people have complained about the staff, in my opinion it is a hit or miss: most were very friendly and actually suggested us a great restaurant for the first night there; however a couple of times the porters and the concierge were a little brisk, though I do not pay great attention to it. They were very accomodating, though when it came to keeping some of our luggage for three days while we were in Santorini, and they did not charge us anything.
The restaurant and the small garden area outside of it are very pretty. The breakfast was excellent, even with a machine to make freshly squeezed orange juice.
The internet connection sucks big time, I got a card for 6 euros for 30 minutes, but the connection was extremely slow, so either you find an internet cafe or give up your e-mail for a few days if you can...
The rooms I found very nice, I was in 2 different rooms each for 2 nights, but both with a view of the Acropolis. The higher the room, obviously, the better the view, but in both I liked the furniture and the bathrooms with a nice fake sky dome. There were bathrobes, and large shower. The main problem, as pointed out elsewhere, is that the hot water can be missing at times in the morning, so that one moment the water is warm, then for 30 seconds it will get cold, then warm again and so forth. This was really the only real drawback with this hotel, and the only reason why I do not give it 5 stars.
Otherwise, the pool looked lovely and it was working fine, the indoor pool looked ok but who would want to be indoor when you have such a view outside...
Overall a great hotel, maybe not perfect, but the location and the view and the good breakfast make it a top choice in Athens.
