“Excellent location for exploring Athens”

Golden Tulip Electra Palace Hotel Athens

I stayed at the Electra Palace for a total of 4 nights (2+2) at the end of August 2006. Overall I think the hotel has a good price/comfort ratio, I would definitely recommend it to friends and if I were to visit Athens again I would strongly consider returning there.
I think that it is paramount that you book a room with the Acropolis view, I bet the experience is much worse in the other rooms without the view. Most of the beauty of the hotel lies in its perfect location, one because it is in the middle of Plaka although in a quiet side street, but also because of the perfect views of the Acropolis (great sunsets).
The lobby is very nice, with classic decor. I can see why some people have complained about the staff, in my opinion it is a hit or miss: most were very friendly and actually suggested us a great restaurant for the first night there; however a couple of times the porters and the concierge were a little brisk, though I do not pay great attention to it. They were very accomodating, though when it came to keeping some of our luggage for three days while we were in Santorini, and they did not charge us anything.
The restaurant and the small garden area outside of it are very pretty. The breakfast was excellent, even with a machine to make freshly squeezed orange juice.
The internet connection sucks big time, I got a card for 6 euros for 30 minutes, but the connection was extremely slow, so either you find an internet cafe or give up your e-mail for a few days if you can...
The rooms I found very nice, I was in 2 different rooms each for 2 nights, but both with a view of the Acropolis. The higher the room, obviously, the better the view, but in both I liked the furniture and the bathrooms with a nice fake sky dome. There were bathrobes, and large shower. The main problem, as pointed out elsewhere, is that the hot water can be missing at times in the morning, so that one moment the water is warm, then for 30 seconds it will get cold, then warm again and so forth. This was really the only real drawback with this hotel, and the only reason why I do not give it 5 stars.
Otherwise, the pool looked lovely and it was working fine, the indoor pool looked ok but who would want to be indoor when you have such a view outside...
Overall a great hotel, maybe not perfect, but the location and the view and the good breakfast make it a top choice in Athens.

“Fantastic experience!”

Golden Tulip Electra Palace Hotel Athens

We were very nervous about our visit to the Electra Palace given some of the bad reviews it has received recently but we had a great time. Reception staff were efficient and friendly, our room was huge and the rooftop pool was absolutely fantastic. We stayed two nights in late August and I think the pool was only recently completed but we spent a lovely afternoon swimming and lounging around admiring the Acropolis from afar!

Breakfast was very good and the concierge was very helpful. The location is also excellent.

Maybe it is hit and miss and we were lucky - admittedly we were a bit annoyed by some noise caused by the air-conditioning but we weren't in the room that much and it didn't disturb our sleep.

We would definitely stay at the Electra Palace again.

“Great Hotel, Awesome Location!!”

I stayed at the Electra Palace Hotel on July 29th & 30th, 2006 with 6 of my friends. We had 3 balcony rooms on the 6th floor with views of the Acropolis. The rooms were very comfortable and clean. The hotel staff was helpful and friendly. At night we hung out on the rooftop balcony (the pool was filled in a few years ago) and enjoyed the amazing views and weather. This hotel is located in a great area of Athens called the Plaka. We were walking distance from all the sites and some amazing restaurants. My only suggestion would be to book your room directly through the hotel. We booked our first night through an online travel agent called Travel Zone and it was the worst experience ever. Travel Zone was quick at first to book our reservation, but their customer service was nonexistent after that. I spent almost 5 weeks trying to contact them to make a change to our reservation. I would also request a room on the front of the hotel. It appeared they were doing some construction to the back half of the hotel and it may be noisy during the day. All in all, this is a wonderful hotel and it really added to our incredible time in Athens.

We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights in July. We had a suite with a private balcony. It was wonderful! The bed was very comfortable. The room was decorated with lovely dark wood. The bathroom was very nice. Maid service was great and twice a day. The breakfast assortment was excellent. My spouse ate his usual egg and sausage etc. breakfast. I had fabulous Greek yogurt with nuts, honey and fruit. There was a good assortment of other foods as well: fresh squeezed orange juice, fruits, cereal, meats, pastry etc. We found the staff as a whole to be helpfull. We are not the type of people who expect to be catered to continually. The location is perfect, right in Plaka with a view of the acropolis. We actually did not have one complaint. I think it is important to remember the population of Athens. People live in apartments, the buildings are close together all the way around, narrow streets in Plaka and so on. Hotels can also be side by side with other building and close together in the back as well.
As far as ratings, it depends on what you are comparing it to. We traveled from Edinburgh throughout the Mediterranean making our way to Barcelona. We stayed in hotels in this price range. We found Golden Tulip Electra Palace to be the best hotel of the European hotels we stayed in.

“Three Stars at Best”

Golden Tulip Electra Palace Hotel Athens

Aug 30, 2006
4/4 found this review helpful

Stayed for two nights at this well located hotel in the heart of Athens. It appears to be recently refurbished to a near 4 star standard. While the facilities are generally quite good, its the details that are not just missing, but completely absent. In the heat of summer, the room air-conditioning was minimal at best. This in strark contrast to the well air-conditioned lobby. On the second day of our stay, the door knob breakfast menu was not replaced. While the Concierge, who was terriffic, was present only the night of our arrival, and was off the rest of our stay, the remaining Reception staff really didn't have a clue about restaurant reccomendations, shopping, etc. The Reception staff are best described as surly, and that's across all shifts. Breakfast room service was simply pitiful, with no quantity of anything to speak of. This too in stark contrast to the excellent breakfast buffet offered in the restaurant. A very nice hotel with obvious problems that needs to be more aggresively managed.
