“Good location but lacking in facilities”

No pool! I hadn't noticed this when I booked the hotel and was very disappointed to find that there was no pool after I had made the booking (the agent didn't tell me). Although they have told me that they have planning permission for a pool, I have no idea where they would put one.

On the plus side, the hotel was very clean. The room was nicely furnished, with wooden floors, a modern bathroom and good air conditioning. The location was good too, with the town centre about a 10 minute walk and the beautiful small beach of Praia Dona Ana about the same distance. The best beach is the Meia Praia on the other side of the harbour, which is quite a walk, but you can get the ferry across.

The down side was that there was no fridge or hair dryer in the room and the safe was not large enought to fit in my digital SLR. They don't supply shower gel and we were only given two sachets of shampoo for a week. We were woken at night by the noisy lift that we were oppposite and other residents. There was also no garden and the terrace was very small with a few tables and no plants. The hotel was OK, but I wouldn't return to it.

There's not much to do in Lagos itself, although the cobbled streets are very pretty and it has good restaurants. It's very much a beach lover's destination not a culture vulture like me!

Got lost looking for this hotel. Don't think there were good directions on the website we booked through so make sure you do get good directions for it. However, once you do find it, you won't lose it again!

This hotel is located quite close to a main road but we were facing a side road rather than the busier road. However, there were disturbances through what were either package holiday guest collections or day trip collections - there were coaches idle-ing in the wee hours of the morning which did keep my travel companion awake. Nice balcony to sit on to catch the last rays of evening sunshine or use to dry bathers!

Comfortable beds but no extra pillows in the room. I used the extra blankets as pillows. I probably could have got extra pillows had I asked at reception but some of the staff were a little sullen and I didn't like to ask.

Good clean bathroom. Excellent shower - how they keep the drainage system clear of sand is beyond me!

Breakfast was the usual standard continental breakfast buffet. The orange juice wasn't great but I'm not sure if that was the hotel or just the way the Portugeuse have their orange juice, I didn't try it anywhere else.

It's a 10-15 minute walk down to the town area with restaurants and bars. Notice I say DOWN to the town. It's a longer walk back up to the hotel as the hill seems mighty big on the return leg. But the walks back were quite fun even if tiring. It was good to stop in the Brit pub called "The Tavern" (I think) on the way back. Lagos has some really nice restaurants and interesting bars retains a lot of the local charm compared to some of the other larger resorts on the Algarve.

Close to some really good beaches. There is quite a lovely cove about 10 minutes walk and then a much larger beach about 5-10 minutes drive in the other direction.

The only other little comment I should make is that the parking area is a bit of a 'mare to get down into. Narrow slope down and lots of pillars. It was free at the time we were there but I have seen that there can sometimes be a charge for it. It was so awkward that we parked on the pavement opposite the hotel, a much easier option!

we stayed at Montemar for 1 week. Very enjoyable, staff very friendly and even gave birthday greetings to my wife (nice touch as we hadn't said anything to them about the event) Accommodation very good, private facilities, tv, phone, only slight drawback - there was no kettle in the room (but we had taken our own small one so that was not really a problem). Underground car park facility. Access might be a bit "tight" for a large car but we had no problem with our renault clio. About 10 spaces so might be an idea to book a space in advance during the busy season. Close to the town centre (a gentle walk approx. 10 mins.) reasonable selection of restraunts nearby and plenty to chose from in the town. Would thoroughly recommend the hotel and would be happy to return in future
