“Kitchen Criminals”

Luz Ocean Club

4 of 5 stars

Basically restaurant - awful , rest - fantastic. A few tips about the restaurant: Firstly breakfast.
If there is no milk for coffee at breakfast, there is usually some by the cereals as no-one tries to eat cereal more than once as it is stale.

Don't even consider the eggs unless you have very good dental cover. They appear to have been fried (or something) en masse very early in the morning. If you are very lucky they may have replaced them with scrambled egg ( there is never both).

Fruit - ok from Thursday onwards ( guests arrive on saturday), looks like delliveries are wednesday night . Until then eat the tinned fruit and tubs of tutti-frutti yoghurt (the only flavour yoghurt on offer until thursday, therafter natural as well, but no low-fat) . Better still, go to the supermarket, where you can buy such luxuries as bananas. You will learn to love that supermarket.

Fruit juice - I don't know what they do with it but it is very strong, is it made from some sort of concentrate? or is it just concentrate? If you get a glass of water (if there is water) you can water it down. One some happy days there was a choice of more than one fruit juice and the apple juice is ok. The croissants and pain au chocolat are generally fine. So you're probably best just sticking to them

Dinner is worse , in part because despite what it says in the brochure it isn't buffet style , so there is normally a long delay before it makes it to your table, if it gets there at all......and when it does often you wish it hadn't. So by the time you have finished it is too late to go and raid the supermarket. Menus come and go quite quickly because for some bizarre reason they don't have very many. The waiters are very good at bringing extra bread because they appreciate you are hungry. The waiters are all very nice people, they are let down badly by something in the system, and some guests complained quite vocally to them . My advice would be to make sure you have had plenty to eat before you go there. . . or better still go to a proper restaurant.

The previous review was written by someone who had travelled with ( I think ) Thomas Cook. They also complained about the food and said something was done about it there and then. Unfortunately this didn't happen with Mark Warner.

In all other respects the holiday was fantastic . The Mark Warner childcare staff were all fantastic and my child needed no encouragement to go. The Mark Warner watersports team were also great. These services seemed to run themselves - probably as a result of very good heads locally (Marianne and Fraser) and very good procedures at head office. Accomodation is fabulous too. But someone deperately needs to sort out the restaurant, and have a better response to the guests who eat there until they do.

We were very impressed. We hired a car for the week as we didnt relish the thought of the 3/4 hours in the airport transfer coach. It was an easy 50mins & we were there.

The reception staff were quick, friendly and very helpful although we struggled to find it due to lack of signs!

Our apartment was lovely & clean and very well equipped (never had a washing machine on holiday before or a real cooker)

The supermarket was extreamly well stocked with everything you would want. The pool areas were lovely and clean and security is very tight there.

Unfortunetly we were half board! It took us an hour to find the millenium, once again due to the lack of signs or a basic map of the resort. When we found it it, it was closed (you only actually get an evening meal 5 out of your 7 nights???) They refused to serve our breakfast the following morning as we didnt book (something else we didnt get told about) When we eventually ate there the food was pants! only 3 choices of food and nothing for a veggie like me! My children had a choice of fish fingers or fish fingers! no fresh fruit or veg. The waiting staff were running around like headless chickens but not actually doing anything & they cater for 100 but they only have 5 menus! you have to wait your turn.

We did complain to our rep (cerrise - thomas cook) and got our money back which we were very happy about. She was brilliant - if your not happy tell someone.

The other thing everyone noticed was that the Thomas Cook guests were treated very differently to the Mark Warner guests. There was a definate segregation.

We had an excellent time, met some brilliant people there which we had lots of fun with and we would go back again but would go self catering.

I would however, try and book an apartment or villa privately and book our own flights.

Having read previous reviews I was concerned when I arrived at the resort about what to expect, particularly from the half board option. Upon our arrival we were shown to a spacious two bedroom apartment, the master bedroom of which had an en suite bathroom and its own balcony. The apartments are spread throughout the village, but centre around three main areas with pools. You do end up walking between these areas quite often, however at the same time you get a choice of three large pools and a chance to get to know the village like the back of your hand. It’s not ideal for families with small children in pushchairs, however we didn’t find it a problem and all the other families at the resort seemed to manage.

The food was absolutely amazing. Apparently a new chef was brought in very recently, and I can honestly say the food served at the Millennium restaurant was one of the highlights of our holiday! With starters such as crab, smoked salmon, gazpacho, feta and roast pepper salad etc. and mains including swordfish, the food was fresh, delicious and healthy. I don’t think I’ve ever eaten so well on holiday! The staff worked really hard and created a friendly, lively and amiable atmosphere. They encourage guests to socialise and by the end of the week lots of families and couples were dining with friends they had made during the week.

Praia de Luz is quite an English resort, all the local bars are owned by English people and all the staff at the resort are English. There is limited nightlife in the village but enough to keep you entertained for a couple of evenings. I’d recommend the Fortaleza restaurant near the church and also the Duke bar (the food there smelt nice too). One night we got a taxi (9 euros each way) into Lagos and went out there which was great fun. All in all we had a great holiday, particularly taking advantage of all the inclusive watersports.

my friend and I decided a lastminute week's break away from the chilly UK weather ,got recommended Ocean Club by Thomas Cook. Yes it was quiet, but the town itself is very quaint, clean, lovely beach and some really good restaurants eg Forteleza opp the church. Ocean club was a bit of a let-down although I couldn't fault our very well kitted out apartment though was right at the back of the resort, but handy 2min to the restaurant. As other reviewers have said, the Millenium restaurant was serving mediocre school dinners. we were on half board.Bland overcooked/reheated food,no veg, rather like school dinners along with overpriced wine, in the background there were hectic harassed waiting staff even though the dining room wasn't particulary full. we did manage to escape & eat out & were treated to a great seafood dinner. would think about going again to Luz for R&R but not to Ocean Club.

“Great Holiday, let down by the food!”

We have just returned from a great 2 weeks at the Ocean Club, booked through Mark Warner. We were met at the airport by charming staff and the journey took an hour to transfer on a good road, our apartment, which was superb was very spacious. spotlessly clean and beautifully appointed by the 24hr reception and indoor pool.

The welcome meeting the following morning was informal and informative. They all seemed a nice bunch with a good team spirit.

We were very well placed. The whole place was very clean and the swimming pools, of which there were plenty, were very nice but being Portugal the water is freezing cold.

Our half board option was a waste of money as the food in the millenium resturant was awful to say the least, for the life of me I cannot understand why the chef could serve such poor food consistently, being in the mediterranean with plentiful fresh fish, veg & fruit you could easily have your 5 a day but not here, I think the chefs were trained at MacDonalds because no veg is served and anything else is such poor quality, frozen, tinned oh and always cold and this includes the breakfast, the poor resturant waiters have to take the flak from complaining clients daily -morning and evening, considering this is an activities based holiday you do need your food but it is awful and reading the reviews on here it has been for some time?

Eating out a couple of nights and lunchtime we never had a bad meal in the town and would strongly recomend 'JASMIM's cafe for cheap coffee, beer, soup and snacks through the day and for the internet.

We took the sailing lesson, did the walks with 'Bobby' and mountain biking with 'Yaz' enjoyed playing tennis and 'Dan' is great, the Mark Warner instructors were great and very helpful and friendly as were all the staff and in the bar say Hi to the beautiful 'Daisy'. The childcare seemed to be very good and best value for kids 6 to 16. The beach is fantastic, very clean with beautiful sand, whilst Luz has no real nightlife, it is perfect if you are looking for somewhere to wind down and just chill in beautiful surroundings.

Warning - Mark Warner clients and I include anyone going with Thomas Cook don't go to the Millenium restaurant in Prai De Lux for the food try to negotiate not half board!!
