Who we are: Mother (60 years old) and daughter (26 years old), traveling around Switzerland to celebrate a birthday. We are staunch non-smokers.
What we are looking for: A quiet place to stay, good food and great value for our money. Any 'luxuries' are much appreciated.
What we got: I couldn't say enough about the Hotel Royal- St. George’s. If you stay in the main part of the hotel (because it's actually two hotels in one), you are treated to a magnificent array of luxury. Each room is different but all offer splendid, Victorian decoration and comfortable beds.
The room: The room we stayed in was a corner suite facing the Jungfrau. We had two beds with royal linens and wonderful pillows, 3 balconies, a living room/ parlor, an enormous bathroom with the most heavenly bath tub, a television, a mini-bar and wonderful Victorian decorations. The richness and quality of the decor is just fabulous. We stayed there for 6 nights during my mother's 60th birthday and we had the time of our lives.
The food: Breakfast is spectacular and the dining area is nothing short of lovely. The room itself is all glass windows and has little lamps and candles by each table with lovely garden flowers. The breakfast offered is typically swiss (bread, jam, cheese, fresh fruit, yogurt, cereals, etc.) but eggs and American breakfasts are also available if you choose. To our great pleasure, the dining room was non-smoking. Dinner is served every night and the meal that we had was fabulous and very reasonably priced.
The spa: Swiss hotels are very interested in making sure your body is well relaxed while you stay in their hotel. The Royal St. George’s is no exception. On the top floor, there is a quaint spa with two Jacuzzis, a wonderful steam bath and a sauna with a lovely view. There is a quiet area in the upstairs area for reading or exercising and everything is kept impeccably clean.
The location: Completely central to everything you'd need in Interlaken. The hotel is located on the main street but just at the tail end of the 'central part' so everything is 5 minutes walking distance and you don't get the noise of the traffic and people. Restaurants are all around and there is a Coop (grocery store) very near by.
The extras: One thing that is unavoidable in Switzerland and especially in Interlaken, is large tour groups. Tourists come in by the busload and this is unavoidable wherever you stay in Interlaken (we've been to Interlaken many times before). The Royal St-Georges does something that I have never seen another hotel do in Switzerland- they keep the large tour groups completely separate from the hotel guests that stay as a couple or as a family. The result works out fabulously. The tours have their own banquet style room with mosaics painted on the ceiling to enjoy all their meals and the tourists traveling in twos, threes or fours are in the main bar or in the dining area. In other hotels, my mom and I felt overwhelmed when tour groups would come in but at the Royal St. George’s, we never felt that way. The only time we saw the tour groups was in the lobby.
Parking: Parking is not a problem at the hotel and is free of charge.
The conclusion: The hotel was fabulously decorated, the room was among the most spacious and comfortable that we have eve stayed in, the food was terrific and the hotel was impeccably clean. The value that the Royal St. George’s offers is worth more than I can express. After leaving, we were sad to stay in other equally priced hotels, wishing we had spent just one more night at the Royal St. George’s.
