“Charm and Service Extraordinaire”

Hotel Vecchio Asilo

All of the reviews that describe Guido's family hotel as superior are accurate. The service provided by Guido is truly remarkable. The rooms are very charming - crisp, white linens, spotlessly clean room, modern bathroom. A special treat is the breakfast - fresh baking and wonderful fruit dishes prepared by Guido's mother and brother.
Guido did tell us that Room #1 had potential to be a little less private due to its location in the front of the hotel overlooking the road. As long as the windows were closed this was not a major issue and the good news was that the traffic stopped after 11pm until 6 or 6:30am. In future we will book earlier and ask for a room in the back of the hotel.

If you are planning a trip to San Gimignano this is an excellent base. The village has one small frattoria for simple pizza and there is a small grocery store - everything one needs for snacks and drinks.

We can't say enough about our favorite stay throughout our 3 week trip to Europe. Many hoteliers could learn about service from Guido and his family - they are gems!

Where do I begin? We stayed four nights at Hotel Vecchio Asilo in May and would have loved to have stayed much longer. Guido and his family are most accommodating and thoughtful. It seems they thought of what we needed before we knew we needed it. Fresh flowers in all the rooms, outstanding breakfasts with a different kind of coffee cake each morning, great suggestions for restaurants and interesting conversations. The location is outside of San Gimiganon and we used it as a base to see Greve, Siena, Volterra and other Tuscan hill areas. What an amazing experience! Thank you so much!!!!

“Very special little place”

Hotel Vecchio Asilo

It certainly deserves the award for one of the top ten best values in the world on Tripadvisor. We wondered if it could live up to all the great reviews. It did and then some. Guido and his family are wonderful, helpful, friendly hosts who really go out of their way to make your stay as pleasant as possible. Our room was lovely, clean, with a nice bathroom, comfortable bed and beautiful views of the countryside and to top it off, fresh flowers on the desk AND in the bathroom. The breakfast was very special. The wonderful cakes, crostini and fresh fruit along with the espresso, capppuccino or hot tea and fresh juice, yogurt, cereal, etc. were delicious. I never thought I would like crostini for breakfast, boy was I wrong. These were great. Unfortunately, the weather was not great when we were there, so we could not enjoy the little patio outside but our stay was still wonderful anyway. Just a little example of the personal attention, one day I had washed out some heavy socks and they were taking a long time to dry. Mama noticed and put them in the boiler room so they would be dry by the time we left. That is SERVICE!! If you need a place near San Gimignano, don't look any further. This is it. I hope we can return.

“Charming little hotel”

We stayed here four nights with another couple. Guido was a wonderful host and he made us feel as if we were his special guests.. His breakfasts were delicious and prepared with such care! We would receive directions and maps each morning as we left for the day, along with suggestions for dining spots. Our rooms were nicely furnished and it seemed as if the bathrooms had been remodeled recently. We had fresh flowers in our room and also noticed them throughout the hotel. The garden is beautiful outside and the countryside amazing. Don't hesitate to stay here and enjoy Guido's hospitality.

“Return visit”

Hotel Vecchio Asilo

5 of 5 stars
San Jose, CA
May 26, 2008

This was our second visit to Hotel Vecchio Asilo and it lived up to all our expectations. Our room was very clean and comfortable with fresh flowers from the garden on the dresser. As before, breakfast was a treat with homemade coffee cake, bruschetta, fresh fruit and cereals. The little town of Ulignano is a pleasant respite from the big cities, but only a short drive to San Gimignano, Siena and Florence.

Guido is a wonderful host, welcoming back as though we were family. After our last trip to Italy, we couldn't resist staying at Hotel Vecchio Asilo one more time, even if only for one day. We're glad we did.
