Lets start by saying that the Rocco Forte Hotel Savoy is housed in a beautiful, classic old building located in the absolute best location in Florence. Locationwise, this hotel appears to be undoubtedly the best choice. That is to say if you are willing to spend EUR 500 per night for the location alone, you will not be dissappointed. However, when you factor in the 5-star standard that the Savoy prides itself on, you will naturally have higher expectations. At least you will expect a rather plush and somewhat decent sized room (particluarly when you book a Deluxe Room category at EUR 500). In reality, what you are offered is a very small, dormitory-style rooms with a nice but tiny bathroom. Yes, I am particularly aware that hotel rooms in central Florence are amongst the most expensive and that Florence itself is a very expensive city, but so is Paris, London, New York, and Tokyo where we normally spend the same amount on 5-star accomodations but get in return exactly what we pay for.
The overall decor of this hotel is modern-chic, which obviously will not suit all tastes, as did not ours. However, I will not dive too much upon this aspect as everybody's preferences differ and one will either love or hate such style. The hotel is geared towards the young and trendy set, which is fine. If you are accustomed to staying at legendary top class hotels such as the Ritz London or Paris, Dorchester or Peninsula collection of hotels, etc., you may not be too impressed with the Rocco Forte collection such as the Savoy. To say the least, rooms are not only small but cheaply appointed and decorated with cheap modern art.
Service was mixed. We came across some very excellent staff who showed true desire to assist, with some going out of their way to please. The doormen were fantastic and really know how to welcome and send-off guests. Once, I went to Gilli's across the street to do some gift shopping and returned with a few bags planning to drop them off in our room before heading out again. As we approached the entrance, the doorman immediately stopped us and said "Let me have the bags sent up to your room so you don't have to go up". It's fantastic that some of the staff are so quick to anticiapte every little needs of their guests. On another note, some of the staff appeared completely indifferent. Some did not answer questions accurately.
All in all, I would reccomend the hotel based on the its location for anyone desiring to visit Florence and wishing to have an expensive (but lacking value) base from which to explore the city. Personally, from the overall experience at the Savoy, I am unlikely to visit other Rocco Forte properties as it doesn't really suit my preferences for 5-star luxury. I went through the brochure showing all their hotels and they are all the same style.
