My wife and I stayed at the Hotel Posta for three nights in May, 2006. I would classify this as a good hotel at an affordable price, comfortable though certainly not "luxurious." It's more than adequate as a base for seeing Palermo, close to everything: the Teatro Massimo, the Vucciria market, the best shops, and the Ristorante Sant'Andrea -- probably our best meal in Sicily (be sure to get a reservation!). Although our room was small the furnishings were entirely adequate, the bathroom scrupulously clean, and the bed was one of the most comfortable we found during our two-week visit to Sicily. If you must have a grand lobby and a spacious room with antique furnishings, stay elsewhere but be prepared to pay a lot more! The desk staff were all very friendly and helpful, especially Annalisa who was a gem.
Forget about a "view." The Posta is on a narrow back street and surrounded by more of the same, so there's nothing to look at. The plus side is it's much quieter than the tourist hotels that are mostly on the main, very noisy streets.
A couple of cautions: First, we were driving a rental car and the map we got from Expedia (via the TripAdvisor booking connections) was totally wrong. The Posta is hard to find -- you have to go north on Via Roma from Via Vittorio Emmanuele, staying in the right-hand lane. On your left you'll see the huge, grey stone "Poste & Telegraphe" building with its 12 large columns, and just at the end of it you'll see the sign for Hotel Posta. Turn right there, then immediately right again and stop at the front door. (If you're still on Via Roma when you get to Via Cavour, you've gone too far. Circle around and try again!) Second, they only have a few garage spaces so be sure to book one at the same time you book your room otherwise you'll have noplace to park your car!
