My wife and I have just come back from a week spent at the Melia Olbia Resort. We went mid April and the weather was sunny most of the time (though not always hot). The hotel room was very good - clean, nicely decorated, and excellent maid service. The only thing that my wife and I felt about the hotel was that, being out of the centre of town, it lacked atmosphere. If you wanted atmosphere/buzz, etc, then you needed to go into Olbia itself. Driving into Olbia in the evening was not easy (the roads are a little confusing in daylight, let alone at night), and it meant that the driver couldn't drink. Although it is nothing special, Olbia does have a few nice restaurants, and it did have a buzz about it in the evening. If I were to go to Sardinia again I would probably look for a hotel in the centre of one of the bigger towns. The buffet breakfast contained lots of choice, but I have definitely had better breakfasts in other hotels. There was a great choice of cheese and ham, but since we ate this a lot for lunch it held less appeal in the mornings. Cooked breakfast was OK, but a choice of egg would have been nice - a tray of rather sloppy scrambled egg was all you could have. Jam, honey, etc was all in little pots rather than sourced locally. This area of the island is very pretty - we drove over 1000 km during the week, going to Alghero, Castelsardo, La Magdelena island, Cape D'Orso, Costa Smeralda, Tempio Pausana. I would say that you need a car regardless of where you stay in Sardinia if you want to see anything of the island (we booked ours through airmiles - very good value). One word of warning if you go out of season as we did - virtually no restaurants were open during the day along any of the stretches of road that we travelled on. We passed many nice looking pizzerias, grills, etc, but all were closed. This was quite disappointing as we were really looking forward to having good food whilst in Sardinia. What this meant was that staying at the Melia Olbia left you with the choice of either driving into Olbia for dinner in the evening, or eating at the hotel. There are two restaurants at the hotel - one charging 25 euros for a buffet dinner (we weren't prepared to pay that much), and another a la carte. We ate here once and had very nice food, though the atmosphere wasnt very relaxed and the wine was very expensive. A good place to stay if you get a cheap deal and are prepared to put up with staying out of town.
