For my 8 days in Venice, I stayed at the wonderful Ca' San Rocco B&B. It's about a five-minute walk from the main train station, or from the vaporetto stop at Piazzale Roma or at San Tomas.
Ca' San Rocco is tucked away on a quiet alley (not on a canal) and has a lovely gated private entrance that leads to a garden and small patio. My room on the second floor (walk-up) was bright and spotless, furnished with Victorian pieces and a large, comfortable bed. I had a lovely view of a private garden. Note: Bring earplugs if you don't want to be awakened by birds starting their day at about 5:30; then again, that's not a bad way to wake up.
The B&B serves a standard continental breakfast on a delightful outdoor terrace and offers a nice selection of tea. You're likely to become addicted to Nutella sandwiches while you're here.
Ca' San Rocco is not inexpensive at all, but nothing in Venice is, so I'd recommend it for its location, cleanliness, charm, and spacious rooms.
Note: If you stay here, make sure to print out and bring the map the hotel's website provides; it's next to impossible to find without it.
