We are a family of 6, youngest is 15, and we stayed at the Dona Palace for four nights over New Years Eve. Overall, the hotel was adequate, but not great value for the money.
We reserved two suites. The suites were large enough and each had a separate sitting area with a pull-out couch that served as a second bedroom for our purposes. The rooms were clean, but not very comfortable. The pillows weren't very good, and the two pull-out couches were very uncomfortable. We had to ask for a second mattress for each pull-out just to get a good night's sleep. The rooms didn't have any furniture other than the bed, a small table with 2 chairs, and a desk with a chair. You would expect a suite to have more comfortable furniture for sitting and relaxing. We were more comfortable in other hotel suites and junior suites where we stayed during other parts of our trip. The rooms were not very well-lit. The bathrooms were fine.
As we were warned by other reviews, the hotel really pushed their own restaurants. This was frustrating because we were there over New Years Eve and had hoped for some good recommendations for the holiday. The staff at the front desk was not helpful; they said we should walk around and see if we found anything appealing on our own. Even when we asked about restaurants we’d read about, they didn't have anything helpful to offer. They directed us to a very touristy dinner show and acted annoyed when we asked for advice. When we asked them to call to make reservations for restaurants we found on our own, on two occasions they forgot or just never did it. However, service outside of the front desk was very good.
The buffet breakfast that was included with our rate was in a beautiful room. The one young woman who waited tables was very helpful and friendly. The breakfast spread was very adequate and tasty.
The hotel was a little difficult to find, but when we arrived we called the front desk and they walked us through it step-by-step. Of course, if you don't have an international cell phone, this would be a problem. Once we arrived, the location was great. Very close to San Marco's square and the vaporetto stops, and in easy walking distance to other neighborhoods. The view of the canal out of our windows was beautiful, and we could even hear the gondoliers singing. It could get noisy, but shutters on the windows helped.
Overall, the hotel was clean and in a great location. But at the rate of 580 euros per suite per night, it was lacking any extras and certainly had no examples of “luxury.” We expected much more comfort and service at such a high rate.
