We stayed in four different hotels during our recent trip to Spain and Hotel El Prado was by far our favorite, AND the best value. The location couldn't have been better for our primary mission which was to spend time in Madrid's "big 3" art museums (Prado, Thyssen, Reina Sofia). But for getting to other parts of the city there are metro* stations just a couple of blocks to the North and South of the hotel, and the Atocha Renfe station is within walking distance for out-of-town excursions via bullet train. The neighborhood is great for strolling around and there are many restaurants (though here as elsewhere in Spain we found few good ones). Our room on the 6th floor was spotless and included an outdoor patio with a wonderful sunrise view over neighborhood rooftops. Everything worked, including the heat/air system which was quiet and precise (something we came to appreciate during this trip). Free WiFi was much appreciated and we made frequent use of it. But most of all, the hotel staff was professional, accommodating and always friendly and welcoming - something we found woefully lacking at other Spanish hotels and most restaurants.
*Some further words on Madrid's excellent Metro system: It quickly and efficiently takes you just about anywhere in the city for E1,20. For 2 Euros (vs 30 Euros for a taxi) you can safely travel to or from the airport in about 45 minutes.

“Great room & location, but noisy neighbors!”

Hotel El Prado

4 of 5 stars
Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Mar 14, 2008

The location is great! Just a quick walk from the Museo del Prado, and a few blocks from a metro stop (Anton Martin or Sol). Taxi fare from the airport cost about 25 Euro-- which I thought was a steal compared to many other European cities.

My room was on the 4th floor. There's some construction going on on the side street-- which was troublesome when I wanted to take a mid-day nap. The room has double windows, which did an awesome job of masking both the construction noise as well as late-night Madrid noise. Warning-- people in Madrid stay out until about 4:00 or 4:30 in the morning, so if your hotel doesn't have good windows, you're in for a long night!

The bathroom was huge, with a gorgeous shower and big bathtub. The room has faux-hard wood floors, which actually were quite nice. The view from the 4th floor wasn't much to speak of, but there wasn't anything particularly ugly out the window.

Breakfast was very nice-- I highly recommend taking a simple morning meal before you go out. Most restaurants in Madrid aren't open for breakfast (though there are some exceptions). The staff was not overly friendly, but wasn't rude either. I'm an American that doesn't speak Spanish, so I can understand a little annoyance that I can't speak the language. Other staff members were extremely nice and helpful-- I think it just depends on who's working.

My one complaint is that though the windows keep the noise out, the WALLS did not. Every night, my neighbors would be up talking, drinking, (and sometimes doing other things-- if you catch my drift), and you coudl hear them through the walls clear as day. Maybe not a big issue during the day... But when its 2am and you just want to get some sleep-- this could be a big problem. If you're super-sensitive to noise from other rooms, I'd advise against staying here. It was really bad.

I came to Madrid to check out the art museums and I found that the Hotel El Prado was the perfect location. Big, clean rooms, nice breakfast in the morning-- it served my needs perfectly.

“Not Hapy”

Hotel El Prado

2 of 5 stars
Istanbul, Turkey

I am making most of my hotel bookings by tips at TA and this is the first time I was let down..

We booked our room through hotel website. I have selected the two rooms option and two adults and double bed accupancy. We got a rate of 196 Euro per two night, two room with double occupancy for two adults including tax. However when we were at the hotel after 5 hrs of car travel from Sevilla, the hotel claimed that there is a mistake and this charge is for single use and the normal rate for double use will be 103 euro per night.

It was clearly stated at the hotels reservation document as our reservation to be double use, But we didnt argue as there was only 5-6 euro difference from their claimed price and stayed at the hotel. The hotel is in the old part of Madrid, close distance to most attractions. The rooms are cosy, not very modern, but nice and comfortable. There is free wifi and also computers at the entrance, which is a big challenge for me..

When we checked out from the hotel, they have asked 220,4 Euros from us. we have said that we booked as 196 Euro, later on, you have said that it will be 103 Euro per night which shall be 206 Euros. But they said its 103 Euro + tax. Our first reservation was 196 Euro including tax, but we have paid 220 Euro including tax..

I felt as ripped off and will definitely not visit this hotel, not because its a bad hotel, but because I didnt like the way they act. If I knew that I will be charged as 220 Euros, For the same price I could choose a different and better hotel,..

“Great Stay”

Great location in old Madrid. Big rooms (even by US standards), hardwood floors, large bathrooms, great staff, the little extras (free snacks, etc.) Definitely would return!

If going to Madrid, take a tip from me and book here. Just don't order the pizza---it's vile.

I wanted to see and experience Madrid. I wanted to be in the centre of the city. I didnt care about views. I wanted a clean, comfortable, secure room at a reasonable cost. this Hotel ticked all the boxes.
The room was lovely. Modern furniture, good spacious bright bathroom. I was in the attic so I could see the roofs of all the other adjoining buildings. That was interesting to see the roofscape of a different country. I would think that most other rooms dont have much of a view. I just got lucky.

I did not take the hotel breakfast, instead I got elsewhere. Save some money and have more variety elsewhere.

Oh, I just remembered, the lift was intermittently faulty. Sometimes it worked sometimes it didnt. Many flights of stairs to my room !
My trip was primarily to see Galleries ...Prado / Reina Sofia / Thyssen.... this Hotel is only 5 - 10 min walk to them all
