“Small room, naff breakfast”

Abba Castilla Plaza Hotel

Jun 30, 2007

Stayed on business for four nights, in what must be the smallest single room for this class of hotel in the known world. Hotel was full (so they must be doing plenty right!) so no better room could be offered.

Restaurant has a pretentious dinner menu with few choices, and was virtually deserted - not surprising. I ate there just the once.

Buffet breakfast is OK if you just want cold meats and/or bread and pastries, but they claim to offer a hot breakfast as well. Their idea of "hot" is at odds with mine; one small heat lamp will simply not keep five dishes even remotely warm, a phenomenon they cheerfully demonstrate each day. I played smart one morning and waited for the arrival of a fresh plate of fried eggs from the kitchen - unbelievably, they were stone cold, as if they'd been cooked the night before and refrigerated.

The a/c in the room was broken when I arrived - a techie bloke arrived amazingly quickly, literally within five minutes, and fixed it using the mat from the bathroom floor and a coathanger (no, I am not kidding.)

Wi-fi worked well and was remarkably cheap compared to most hotels.

To be fair, I didn't try any of their other facilities, which may well be excellent.

“Convenient Location, Great Hotel”

First time in Madrid and stayed in this hotel per a Spanish friend's recommendation. We were pleased with the location, not in the center of Madrid but close enough where the Metro line across the street from the hotel can take u downtown in 15 mins. It was great as we were away from the hustling bustling of tourists and party goers. The hotel offered a soothing ambiance with a jacuzzi, steam, sauna on the top floor. Higher floors has a nice big window view of the city. Bus line are right across the streets and we relied on the buses late nights when the metro was closed.

I would stay here again. Prices are worth it for this hotel compared to downtown location. It's clean, it's comfortable, and yes, I would stay here again!

“Good but not wonderful”

Stayed at the Castilla Plaza for one night on a business trip. The hotel is easily accessible from the airport - I was in my room within 30 minutes of leaving the airport by taxi - though the location is somewhat distant from the city centre and the main tourist areas. However, metro services to the nearby Plaza de Castilla station are good. The area around the hotel is non-descript, and somewhat dominated by the bus station immediately outside the main entrance. Internally, the atmosphere is pleasant and staff helpful. Rooms are satisfactory, if unremarkable, for a four star establishment. Dining facilities are similarly satisfactory. However at a room rate of €115 per night, it was good value.

Stayed here on business and although I spent hardly any time there it seemed a very nice modern hotel, with lovely room and bathroom.

“Decent Hotel”

Abba Castilla Plaza Hotel

I stayed at the abba Castilla for a 7 day business trip in Madrid the last week in June. The room was nice, but small. Enough room for just one person. There is a bed, small refridgerator, television, phone, desk (wireless internet access for a fee), ample closet space, and a good sized bathroom (the bathroom may have more room to move than the bedroom itself!). Don't try to make international phone calls from your room though -- you will be charged by both the hotel and on your calling card! You have to go down to the lobby to make international calls. There is breakfast for a fee each morning that has a nice array of food. Don't worry about working out as the gym does not have much to offer. I am not sure if that is standard for a Spanish hotel, but very different from most hotels in America. The staff was friendly and always willing to help. The restaurant food was fair (mainly seafood), and the bar served a few sandwiches and drinks. The ham and cheese was actually very good! This hotel is also located directly across from the bus station, which could be loud at night if you are a light sleeper, but is also very conveient for getting into town. They run all hours of the day and night, and are very consistent. All in all, not a bad hotel, but nothing spectacular either.
