I spent 3 nights at the Rock Hotel in May, 2006. It's an old colonial-style hotel but has been kept up pretty well. The room I had was slightly worn but generally OK. The staff was OK but not great. Some of them were young and rather inexperienced.
The buffet breakfast was fabulous. The biggest meal I had all day was breakfast, I kept going back for more. The dining room and the foyer sitting rooms really take you back to the colonial era.
However, the real highlight of staying at the Rock Hotel is the view from the balcony. It's really one of the greatest views I have ever had at a hotel. Morocco is on the left, Spain and the bay is in front of you and to the right, Gibraltar is below you, and the Rock of Gib is behind you. The view was the highlight and the balconies are very large with chairs and even lounges.
However, at almost $300 US per night this place isn't cheap. Even with everything good I just said, it's still somewhat overpriced. If I ever go back to Gib I would even consider staying across the border in La Linea. I saw some nice 3 star hotels right across from the beach. Gib is a short walk from La Linea and buses leave for Gib town center right after you cross the border.
