“Pleasant stay at The Rock”

Rock Hotel Gibraltar

We stayed at this hotel as we heard from relatives that it was THE place to stay in Gibraltar. The hotel has had many famous guests over the years. I dont think that the location is as good as the other leading hotels in Gib. We didn't have use of a car and the walk to the hotel is up a very steep hill. The hotel will arrange taxis for you and they are a reasonable price.

I was impressed with the lobby area which was spacious and filled with many large plants and comfy sofas. There is a disabled lift at street level that takes you up to the lobby area, but unfortunately you then need to take steps down to the front desk.

Our room was on the third floor and was spacious enough for the four of us. I really liked the large, clean bathroom. We had a small balcony that gave a lovely view of Spain.

Breakfast was substantial. There is a good selection of cereals, fruits, yoghurts, cheeses and cold meat. There is also bacon, scrambled eggs, sauages, beans, mushrooms etc if you fancy a full english.

We never ate at the restaurant but we did order room service a few times. The food was of a high quality and served to our room quickly.

We were accidentally charged for a meal we never had at the restaurant, so I would advise people to carefully check their bill when they check out from the hotel.

As many have said, it's a little bit tired but its 80 years old. That said, we were pleasantly surprised by how good our stay was.
LOCATION - Overlooking the botanical gardens and 2 mins walk to Cable Car. Only 10-15 mins walk to town. Having seen other Gibraltar Hotels e.g Bristol, Queens, Caleta - easily the best looking and positioned hotel. Also, lots of car parking spaces.
ROOM - third floor, large, clean what else could you want? On the down side, the beds are a bit firm and there is no room safe. A/C works well - needed due to the distant port noise and scooters on the main road. That said, a very pleasant room.
STAFF - front desk were extremely pleasant and helpful. However, the bar and restaurant staff were not on the same level.
BREAKFAST - standard hotel breakfast, not a massive choice but nice enough.
PRICE - the rack rate is about £165 and even phoning direct doesn't get you any discount. However, with some surfing, managed to book 4 nights at £67 prpn inc Breakfast - a real bargain.
CONCLUSION
A 3½ star hotel really. That said, at £67 per night it's a real bargain. Would definately stay again.

“At the Rock”

Rock Hotel Gibraltar

We booked a superior room (215) for a long weekend. It turned out to be quite large with a good sized balcony. The hotel is a little 'tired' and could do with refurbishment. However it was comfortable enough and we found the staff helpful and friendly. The food was good and the prices reasonable. This hotel is very colonial in style and harks back to the days when Britannia ruled the waves.

It is next door to the casino and a short walk to Main Street.

We would stay again.

“What happened this year?”

Rock Hotel Gibraltar

Oct 12, 2007
3/3 found this review helpful

We stayed at the Rock in 2005. We had a re-furbished room and spent many hours just sitting and looking at the incomparable view from a rather scruffy balcony. No matter. The pool area and garden were wonderful. What happened this year? Shabby room with stained curtains and scuffed wallpaper. We found some of the staff extremely helpful and some so indifferent it bordered on rudeness. The gardens were neglected, grass at least 9 inches long and bald patches everywhere. Discarded function furniture and bar staff that didn’t bother to collect empty plates thus attracting flies. No more tapas by the pool, the new menu offers different variations on the sandwich theme, not very inspiring. We also thought that the Gibraltarian paying members were inconsiderate towards the paying guests, allowing their children to run riot and eventually provoking a complaint from us to management when they started digging up the roots of a perfectly innocent banana tree with their little spades and filling their buckets from the pool. . On behalf of that mother and nearby guests I would like to suggest that management also considers installing baby changing facilities and refurbishing toilet facilities in the pool area. On the positive side. The new air conditioning system works really well. We hope to return for a few days next year, Gibraltar is a good base for Andalucia and the Rock really is the best place to stay. We will ask for one of their re-furbished rooms and we will be visiting earlier in the year. Perhaps the gardener and the pool bar staff will be well rested after the winter break.

“Great food, service and views, but not so pretty inside”

Rock Hotel Gibraltar

Oct 1, 2007

We stayed here for 3 nights for our wedding in Gibraltar. Like other reviewers I felt the decor left a lot to be desired, old fashioned and a little shabby, although spotlessly clean. However, the service was second to none. The reception staff, while not being friendly, were very efficient (I made numerous requests of them to help with co-ordinating wedding arrangements). Waiting staff, particularly during our wedding reception in the hotel, were very attentive. The food we had for our reception was excellent, and other meals we had there were also good. We totally immersed ourselves in the hotel's old fashioned style, afternoon tea and cake on the terrace followed by cocktails as the sun set was a favourite pastime.
It wasn't too far to walk into the town, and its just across the road to the gardens where we had our wedding ceremony - a bit difficult to walk down that steep hill when you're in 3 inch heels though! I thoroughly recommend the Botanical Gardens for a romantic setting for a wedding, and the staff there are happy to help with extra arrangements such as drinks and canapes for after.
All in all I doubt we'll be visiting Gib or The Rock again, but it was a lovely venue for an intimate and relaxed wedding.
