“Bargain hotel - You get what you pay for!”

H Top Olympic Hotel

I've recently arrived back from a two week break in this hotel, and I have mixed feelings about this place, as a point of reference I stayed in the jaime 1 last year at the same time of year so I have something to compare the olympic to.

First of all this holiday cost about £300 pp all inclusive via ferris.com, my partner hates flying so the coach is one of the only options.

A few notes on ferris - we thought they were great, lots of leg room on the coaches, got there in a reasonable amount of time with enough stops on the way and I think for this price you can't go far wrong.

The Bad Points:

The hotel is somewhat stuck in the past, apart from the reception area everything else seemed outdated, the rooms were quite small, the decor was old and tired and everything about the hotel seemed quite cheap. Compared to the jamie 1 it wasn't that good in this respect. 2nd big point would be that the pools didn't have any supervision. 3rd point - the bars whilst being free due to the all inclusive offer were short staffed, I guess this was to stop people having too much, also the bar would only serve 2 drinks per person per card, and everything was served in about 1/2 pint plastic glasses. The all inclusive offer we went for was only for local drinks so for example a bottle of becks would not be included. It might be worth noting this as a few customers didn't know this and ended up paying a supplement for none local drinks. Now apart from a pretty poor snack bar (cold chips, and dodgy hot dogs) there wasn't much wrong with anything else.
Even though this didn't affect me, I heard one lady say that the family rooms were very small and that each of their kids had to top and tail in the beds.

The Good Points:

The rooms had a/c, tv, and everything else that you would expect for this price. The food was buffet style and I'll say once again that if you go away to spain expecting english food then you will be disappointed, the food served was meant to suit all of the people at the hotel,(there were Spanish and German people staying at the hotel as well as British) I didn't think any of the food was bad, and most of it was better than average, some of it was really good. Compared to the jamie 1 the buffet style menu was far better in terms of choice, and the meal times felt organized, rather than being feeding time at the zoo. The bar was well stocked and all inclusive offers I felt were very good, they did offer an upgrade if you wanted none local drinks. Most of the bar staff were pleasant enough, and as long as you acted pleasant to them everything was ok. All the pools were clean and the areas around them had plenty of sun loungers and plenty of seats. The night entertainment was ok, and there seemed plenty for the kids to do in the day.

The resort:
I much preferred Calella to Salou, it just had more to offer, more places to go in the day such as cafes/shops/bars and at night there were plenty of resturants/bars/clubs. There was also a good mix of spanish style bars (where drinks could be as cheap as 1 euro for a pint) and then english bars with sky tv (where drinks were more like 3 to 4 euros a pint) The only downsides for Calella would be the beach which is very grainy and hard to walk on. If you stayed near the beach front there is a train which goes past every hour or so. Apart from this I think Calella had something for everyone.

The weather:
We went to Salou the same time last year and it was very hot, but when we picked up people from Calella that year they had a stormy couple of nights and mixed weather. This year in Calella we had mixed weather. We spoke to a local who suggested that after about the 15th august Calella is prone to more adverse weather.. Might be worth bearing in mind...Hearing other people talk about Calella suggested that its pretty nice all year round even in May or early in the season.

Summary:
So for a cheap sun get-away I highly recommend it, especially for couples without children due to the pool and 'family rooms'.For this price you can't expect the best hotel in the world, but it offers all the basics you need as well as some good food and a well stocked bar. I would highly recommend ferris if you need to go on a coach as well.

“Awful !”

H Top Olympic Hotel

We booked our 4 nights at the H Top Olympic to get away from the terrible English summer !!

When we arrived we were ordered to handover our passports, the reception staff had no time for us and as we stood there waiting for our keys we just heard complaint after complaint ! The room was pleasent enough although we were on the fifth floor and there was only one main lift to fit ten and two lifts which can only fit three people each. Due to the amount of people constantly checking in and out we had to take the stairs on most occasions.

The food was awful !! On our first night we saw a chef serving up the 'meal of the day' when we got close enough to see it was we saw he was serving cheese and ham toasties. There was a lot of salad which we were afraid to eat and more pasta than you would know what to do with. It was hard to get a table in the dining hall as the staff were not very good at clearing the tables and we often ate surrounded by dirty plates.

The entertainment was bad too, being in the hotel in the evening reminded me of the cult tv show Phoenix Nights, we headed into town which wasn't much better. In town there are a lot of Dutch and Germans most of which were under 20.

I would never go back here, luckily I was only here for 4 days and we could afford to leave the hotel. For families wanting to spend their time here in order to use the facilites and food/drinks I would advise you do not stay at the H Top. The hotel is a laughing point amongst guests and people complain readily.

“Worst Ever”

H Top Olympic Hotel

I went with my partner and 2 boys 11 & 10.
The hotel looks like a council block of flats, and it might of well of been
When we opened our room we just laughed, 4 beds all next to each other, just enough room to walk past, had problems opening balcony door as the beds were in the way.
Breakfast: All catererd for the foriegners, fried eggs were all green, scrambled eggs all over cooked, bacon looked like it had ran past the grill, you even had to queue up for the toaster, some people had 8 pieces of bread to toast, this was done on a sliding rack toaster 1 piece at a time.Hot dog sausages with no colour. This made you mentally sick, just by looking at it. All luke warm.
Lunch: Not very good, if you like salad you will be in heaven. Most of the food is reheated and turned into something else at the next meal.
Supper: The same as lunch.Only 1 barman for the lunch & supper service, only 2 drinks per card only, children have to queue up on their own aswell, no where to help your self to any soft drinks, only through the barman. You are not allowed to take any food out of the dinning room, if you are caught, they tell you, you are not allowed, even fruit or drinks.
sometimes we were queing all the way up the stairs waiting for a table to eat the garbage on offer.
Snacks: Only in the dinning room, no other areas in the hotel complex did any, and it was [--].
Swimming Pool: 3 x pools, 2 in front of the hotel are mirror images of each other, but very small. The main pool is made up of 2 round pools divided by a bridge, which was closed at all times. There was a life gaurd on the first day and then for the rest of the 2 weeks, no one. The bigger round pool was quite deep, so weak swimmers beware. The pool is also to crowded as it is too small for the amount of peole staying at this dump. The block of flats over shadows the swimming pool so it is freezing all the time. Also at the pool bar, only 2 drinks per card. only ice creams in individual tubs are allowed for children on their cards only.
Main bar: The bar is very long but only only 1 barman in the day time and mainly 2 in the evening, sometimes 3 if you are lucky. The barman are always busy, but that does not help us, as we have to queue up sometimes 20 mins, also no where to get soft drinks, only through the barmen, same for the kids.
Entertainment: Just a different old DJ every night, who may sing or play an instrument, same thing every night., very boring.
They dont get any one up and want you to stay, so every one goes out and just comes back just before midnight, to get the last free drinks in, if you are luck enough to get any.
Kids Club: Nothing to do for kids aged between 8 & 16, all geared towards the very young because they dont know any different.
Complex: This complex is very small, there is no where for anybody to go and do anything, so all the kids run around the main bar, and constantly get told off, but their is nothing for them to do.
The Beach: Manmade, no sand, very fine grit, two steps into the sea and it is very deep. Very chopy.
Please dont go there.
Happy holidays
