After searching high and low for the right hotel for a brief stay in Barcelona, I chose the Hotel Montecarlo based in large part on Tripadvisor reviews.
Upon arrival at the airport, I took a taxi to the hotel. I did struggle a bit to get my luggage up the few steps leading into the hotel, as there is no staff waiting to assist. However, once I made it to the reception desk, everything was great.
I arrived around 10 in the morning, which was of course earlier than usual for check-in. I was initially told that my room was not yet ready, but a staff member nearby (presumably someone more senior) said to hang on, and then when he finished helping the guest he was with he found me a room that was ready so that I could check in - which was much appreciated after the long flight from the US. A staff member showed me my room and then delivered my luggage for me.
The room was lovely, spacious and quiet. I didn't have much of a view, but it didn't really matter to me since I didn't plan on spending much time hanging around in the room. The marble bathroom was especially pretty. I did have a brief problem with the electrical outlet in the bathroom not working, but that was quickly resolved when someone came up to the room and flipped the breaker. The room had everything I needed including a minibar, blow dryer, safe, etc. Prices for drinks from the minibar seemed quite reasonable. The bed was very comfortable - and could even be adjusted so I could sit in an upright position while reading or watching TV.
I truly loved the location of this hotel, being able to walk out the door and be on a busy area of Las Ramblas. There are many restaurants, shops, etc. nearby, and it was enjoyable just to walk up and down the streets. You can catch either of the major tourist buses with about a five-minute walk to Placa de Catalunya. There is also a metro station a couple of minutes away.
Upon checkout I needed a taxi, and the staff was gracious in telling me just to wait inside while they hailed a taxi for me and got my luggage down the steps to the taxi. Not being very proficient in Spanish or Catalan, I had written down my destination (I was going to the port to catch a cruise) and the hotel staff member was kind enough to relay it to the driver, who spoke no English. In fact, the cab driver I had coming in from the airport did not seem to speak any English either - while most of the hotel staff seemed to have perfect English. This was another plus for me.
In summary, the room was nice, the staff was gracious, and the location was perfect. I would love to stay at the Montecarlo again the next time I am in Barcelona (which I hope is soon!).
