We stayed here for one week during a three week vacation in Europe. We were looking for a reasonable hotel in Southern Spain, on the Mediterraen, but in a quaint location. We found it all at the Playamaro. The room was very large, not fancy, but very clean and comfortable. Our rate was extremely reasonable and included breakfast and dinner. The breakfast was good, but the dinners were great. Three courses and the food was delicious. The staff at the hotel were extremely friendly and helpful. Their English was quite limited, and our Spanish even more so, but we got along fine. The hotel is not fancy, so if that is what you are looking for, go somewhere else. The town of Maro is a very small village near Nerja, which is a much bigger tourist town. Maro itself is all typical white architecture and we felt like we were actually staying in a village where people live, not just a tourist trap. The beach at Maro is small and secluded, down a steep road from the hotel. We walked it a few times and drove other times. In Nerja there were several other beaches right in town with restaurants, shops, etc. Playa Burriana and Playa Calahonda were our favorites.Going east from Maro, the road was very scenic with several undeveloped public beaches and also other towns. The nearby beach of La Herradura had great swimming, some snorkeling, and a peaceful pebbly beach. Easy day trips into the mountains to Trevelez and other "white villages". Also an easy day trip to Grenada and the Alhambra. We had only planned to stay at the Playamaro for a few days, but we liked it so much, we stayed a whole week. After being in London and Paris, it was a great place for us to soak up some sun and give our budget a chance to recover.
