We actually stayed here as part of a scuba diving package with the dive shop located right behind the hotel. The overall package gave us a sea view room for 2 adults and an 8 year old, with breakfast, for 96 Euros a night, low season rates.
The hotel kindly set us up in a larger room, which was way in the back. I wanted a sea view room and insisted they move us. Which did not make the desk people happy, but they did it. And the sea view rooms are much smaller. They were not kidding. And you really can't view the sea much because of all the trees around the hotel. In high season I would take the cheaper room and call it good.
The rooms are nice, with modern bathrooms, plenty of power outlets, TVs with channels in Spanish, German, English, and French, and a small minibar. I would have expected a hot pot to make tea or coffee in my room though and was disappointed in this.
The breakfast was huge. The guests seemed to be either British or German and that is how the breakfasts were laid out. Full English breakfast, or a typical European/German spread of meats, cheeses, and breads. They brought huge pots of coffee to our table and you could have all you wanted. It was great.
We ate one dinner in the hotel. You can order off the menu or take the buffett. We took the buffett and for the 3 of us, drinking water, it was 56 Euros. Now, the meal was salmon, hake, veal, pasta, and a large salad bar. The desert buffett was huge and, in my opion, the best part. However, I still felt this was expensive and we only ate here one night.
The outdoor pool and surrounding area looked nice but it was too cold to use. The indoor pool was busy, but ok. When the scuba divers want to use it for classes they close part of it.
The hotel has a small corner of sea access with a lot of sun chairs out there. Be warned that the beach is mostly rocks and the water did not look nice. Yes, it was winter, but I got the impression that the cities storm sewers run all along the beach, not just here, and when it rains the storm sewers empty into the ocean. There were a half dozen sewer covers within a short walk on the beach anyway. Makes you wonder...
The dive shop was great. They have a full range of equipment and people. I ended up diving in Gibralter where it was more protected, which added a bit to the cost, but I had no complaints. They were great in the pool with my daughter and wife, neither of whom had been down before. A very positive experience.
It is a 45 minute drive to Gibralter from here, if you are going there.
My only two real complaints were:
1.This place was hard to find. There is no street address on the web site for a GPS and it is tucked back on the beach with several other hotels in the immediate area. The brand new signs are very, very, small, and if you are trying to watch the traffic and not watch for signs you will miss them. It took us about 45 minutes to find the street to get down to the hotel.
2. There are no other places to eat near here. Perhaps many were just closed up because it was Feb, but we drove around a lot and found many Indian, Chinese, burger joints, and things like that, but could not find a nice Spanish place to eat anywhere. And you can not just walk to anything either since this hotel is way back from the highway.
Some parts of the hotel are starting to look old. Carpets are worn here and there. It is dark. Things like that. So some people had a negative view of the place. But everything worked, we never had any problems, the staff always helped us (eventually) and we would not mind going back again.
