“Not my sort of place”

Burns Art Hotel Duesseldorf

3 of 5 stars
London, England
Jun 12, 2008

It didn't start well - my heart sank when the taxi stopped outside and I saw where we were staying. The hotel is in a building in which part of the frontage is a shop and the whole thing looked a bit seedy, which of course it is not. The reception is in a small front area that doubles as a bar, and the gentleman on reception was not unpleasant, just not terribly helpful - when we later asked where the shops were he circled a large area on the map and said it was all shops. Consequently we never found the main shopping street. The male receptionist on the Sunday and lady on Monday were much more helpful. As documented the property has what seems to be the smallest lift in the world of hotels. This took us to our room which would be called by some arty and minimalist, but to me it was bare and soulless. I must add that the bathroom was extremely well equipped and absolutely spotlessly clean. We had breakfast included in our rate and I was surprised how good it was, it could not be faulted. The hotel was walking distance to the Rhine where we spent a very enjoyable Sunday morning with a pleasant lunch, and It was also easy to walk to the metro to take the ubahn to LTU arena to attend a concert. Clean room, very good spotless bathroom, excellent breakfast but I'm sorry, just not my sort of place.

Sharp, small 4 star hotel tucked away in a quite side street, yet close to the railway station, Konigs Allee, the shopper's paradise and not far from the altstadt and the Rhine.
Our 5th floor room proved an ideal lair for a short break, warm, well equipped and the hotel has interesting artwork and friendly staff.
The breakfast room is in the basement and is a brick arched room with vaulted ceiling reminiscent of a church undercroft, and the breakfast buffet served is both superb and generous.

“Comfy enough but!”

Burns Art Hotel Duesseldorf

Booked this one night stay as I had to be near the station, which the hotel info suggested it was (500m). However, walking out in the dark early evening, I soon was lost and had to go into another (budget) hotel and order a taxi. I did walk back to the station the next morning, took ten minutes. Could be me, but not as close as 500m methinks!
Room comfy, shower room fine, all clean and tidy, a bit lifeless for me but it did say "arts" in the title.
Breakfast spread was very expansive, for 18 Euros, which I think is a lot of money for breakfast anywhere, but no complaints.

May have to do this trip again but would probably stay nearer the station - what with train connections and train delays (German efficiency?) I lost a lot of time the next morning.

“BY the train station agin :)”

Burns Art Hotel Duesseldorf

4 of 5 stars
Atlanta, Georgia

Boutique hotel with emphasis on the product. The staff was very helpful but did not always have the services needed at 4 and 5 star hotels. The ceiling heights kept me from feeling like I was in a 22 M squared room. We did not experience anything negative (noise, etc.) with thge room. The comforter and pillows were nice. The bathroom was a little small but considering our rate we felt the room provided an extremely good value. The Thai restaurant in the same building was incredible and sold out on a Tuesday night (get a reservation if you do not want to eat early.) We were in walking distance from everythng in the city and only three blocks from the KO and six or seven blocks from the riverwalk. Would stay here again if ever in this city of commerce.

    • Liked — Nice renovation in a beautiful building
    • Disliked — Found out I needed more services than a typical boutique hotel can provide

“Not Bad Burns”

Burns Art Hotel Duesseldorf

4 of 5 stars
Durham, United Kingdom
Aug 7, 2007

This is a good quality hotel, particularly at the rate and seeing as it’s in one of Germany’s most affluent cities.
The location is good as it’s only a short stroll from the main train station in one direction and the main shopping drag in the other. Our room was on the top floor and was rather smart (read minimalist) albeit not the biggest room. We also had a little balcony overlooking the city (not the prettiest view I’ll have to admit). The only thing missing was air con. The room was provided with a free standing fan. We were there in early June so it wasn’t too warm - might be a struggle in mid-summer though.
Breakfast was served in a stylish cellar area and the buffet selection was first rate.
It’s only a small hotel so there isn’t much in terms of public areas. The bar is a tiny add-on to reception for instance.
We were there only there one night and arrived late so we ate at the Thai restaurant next door – as recommended by previous reviews. We were there on Friday night and I’m glad we booked ahead via the hotel as the place was packed. The food, décor and service were all very good – worth a visit.

    • Liked — The decor, the breakfast room in particular
    • Disliked — The lack of air con
