“Great Location in Hamburg”

TOP Hotel Oper

3 of 5 stars

The Hotel Oper is a cheap and cheerful hotel in a great central location in Hamburg. The room was tiny, really tiny; and the bathroom is minscule; but being less than 250m from the waterfront, and with a parking garage, this was a great value stay in Hamburg. There's no views, no in-room fridge or coffee-making etc, but there's dozens of great cafe's etc a short walk down at the waterfront.

The hotel is stuck in a 70's time-warp, and I suspect the whole place is in serious need of a makeover, but you'll be hard pressed to find a better location, especially at this price!

We stayed at this hotel in December 2006 and our experience left me quite surprised at some of the other reviews. We were travelling on a budget so wanted somewhere cheap (but clean) to stay in the centre of Hamburg, which is quite a dificult task.

The hotel is a little old fashioned in terms of the decor and strangely has a car park on the floors between the reception and the rooms! However, you will struggle to find a better hotel for this price in this location. The rooms are clean, quiet and comfortable and the staff were friendly. I would recommend getting breakfast elsewhere if you can or do not have it included, we did this everyday because Hamburg has countless quality restaurants, cafes and snack bars to choose from.

Being a former Hamburg resident I have experienced lots of different places in Hamburg but I would go back to Hotel Oper.

“Not proper for non-smokers”

It is well located, without any doubt. But that is the only positive thing I can say!
We asked specifically for a non-smoking room since we live in a civilized european country where people respect non-smokers. But there was smoke coming inside our room all the time since smoking areas are located just outside the "non-smoking rooms". Not only am I pregnant, but have astma!
The price and location does Not compensate for the discomfort.

“Good Value but need to fix the hotel website”

We have just returned from a two night stay at this hotel. We booked two twin rooms for four ladies on a shopping trip. When we arrived at hotel, they did not have our reservation. When I presented a copy of emailed receipt from the hotel, I was told that the website was not working at the moment, but that they had rooms. I pointed out that it was working when I made the booking. We were offered two double rooms, which on inspection were two twins pushed together. One of the rooms smelled of smoke. On the positive side, the rooms were warm, beds soft but comfortable, good bathrooms and the breakfast was ok. We paid €77 euros each for two nights b&b. Breakfast avail 6.15 AM TO 11AM and consisted of buffet, juice, cereals, meats, boiled or scrambled eggs, yoghurts and breads/croisants and tea/coffee. This hotel is in a very good location for all of Hamburg. Our visit was for the Xmas markets and the hotel is near the Alster lake, Rathaus, Gansemarkt, several shopping centres. Around corner is ubahn underground station and for any families a supermarket (Rossman) which was very cheap and McDonalds. There was a small bar in hotel, but it was dead and a chinese restraunt. I really liked Hamburg, the markets were great and the shopping quite good. There is a massive C&A store, six floors and H&M etc. The ZOB bus station is very central. Overall, I would recommend this hotel, but make sure that website is working and perhaps phone the hotel to confirm that they have your booking. With flights with Ryanair costing €30 and the hotel costing €77 and the shuttle bus costing €16, this was a very cheap and affordable weekend break.

“Can't beat the location”

TOP Hotel Oper

Can't beat the location, - thought, I''d start with the positive side. Call me spoiled but there was nothing complimentary: no soap, shampoo, showercap, hairdryer. The bathroom (and the room itself) was very spacious, - but there was no place to put your personal belongings on. And there was a funny smell in the room (but I think it was the cleaning liquid). I'm pretty small (159 cm) but for me the bed was too short!
But still, Hamburg's Citycenter was just a few steps away and for one weekend (8 - 10. 12.2006) it was okay.
