“Great Hotel in Berlin”

Mercure Hotel & Residenz Berlin Checkpoint Charlie

May 27, 2008

Recenty stayed here to attend a conference at the ICC in Berlin. Hotel is a nice clean 4 star hotel. Very close to Checkpoint Charlie (about 3 blocks away). We booked the cheapest room available and got upgraded to a large room on arrival. Downside was that the room was on the 8th floor and the elevator only goes to the 7th floor. Not a big deal on a daily basis except for the luggage. The rooftop room was quite nice although it had some quirks (which are to be expected in older buildings). For example, the toilet and shower were located in separate bathrooms.

Staff was very nice. Service was great. For example, we left the do not disturb sign on our door while out sightseeing one day and when we can back, a bag full of clean towels was left on the door knob. Free apples are available at the front desk and Tuesdays are free massage days (register at the front desk for a free 15 minute massage).

Perhaps the only downside was lack of a coffee maker in the room.

“Loved it and would definitely go back!!!”

Mercure Hotel & Residenz Berlin Checkpoint Charlie

May 26, 2008

Stayed for a whole week, and can't complain at all. Location's great, close to subway station, shopping area, easy walking distance to excellent restaurants, etc. Some might consider it being away from all the "main areas" but that is NOT TRUE. It is so excellently located, there is really nothing to complain about. Great buffet in the morning, nice staff, wonderful patio out in the back...would definitely recommend it to everyone!!!

“Exceeded expectations”

Mercure Hotel & Residenz Berlin Checkpoint Charlie

May 24, 2008

Just back from six nights at the Mercure Checkpoint Charlie, in Room 706 (same as Little Cupcakes, May 2, 2008, review).

Big room, more like a suite. Hideous colour scheme, royal blue chairs and orange carpet, but that's the only criticism. Excellent bathroom, with separate toilet. Everything spotlessly clean.

Helpful staff. Free internet access in the lobby. We didn't want the full buffet breakfast for 18 Euros, so they provided juice, rolls and coffee for 5 Euros.

The location is excellent, about a two-minute walk from Stadtmitte subway station on Friederichstrasse, where two lines intersect.

Altogether, much better than we expected.

“We LOVED it!”

We recently stayed at this hotel upon the recommendation of trip advisor. I can't say enough about how friendly the staff was. They were nice and helpful. The rooms were extra large and very clean. We had a suite for three people-a nice surprise because we were expecting a 3rd bed to be a sofa. The only surprise was the breakfast which we thought came with the room but it was 18 euros extra. That was our fault for not asking. However, the breakfast was a good value for they had a large selection of meats, cheese, pastries, again with a very friendly staff. The location which is one reason why I selected this hotel to begin with was excellent. Only a 5 min. walk to check point Charlie and the hop on hop off bus which I highly recommend. Also close to the metro station. Overall the best hotel we have ever stayed at in Europe.

“Excellent value”

This hotel has so many positive reviews I saw little choice but to stay here. Especially given the excellent price. But I will say it was more three star in areas than the four they showed on their door.

The staff were overly friendly professional. Up there with the best I have seen in Europe. They speak very good English also.

The room was more like a suite so maybe we got lucky. It had a separate living area and a huge bedroom. Off the living area was an external balcony looking down into the court yard. The funriture though, a blend of Orange carpet, yellow curtains and vivid blue suede chairs did cheapen the look with a feel more like a motel. But fittings including the bathroom with separate bath and shower were quality.

Location wise this is brillant. It is walking distance to everything and only a 25 minute cab to the airport for about €25.

I didn't try the breakfast because you are surrounded by cafes. A lot of chain type stuff but a decent coffee at least.

On the street of the hotel is an Italian restaurant with the friendliest staff I have encountered. Good food and very good wine list. Highly recommend it.
