Just returned from a 4 night stay at the Derag Hotel Grosser Kurfuerst Hotel.
One of the best attributes the hotel has is its location. Situated in Mitte, the entrance to Markisches Museum U-Bahn station on the U2 line is literally on the hotel doorstep (see candid photo of tube station entrance from our room). The station is two stops from Alexanderplatz, the first major station on the way into the city from Berlin Schoenfeld airport, and we were stood in our room only 1 hour after getting off the plane.
The location gives an excellent base to explore the city and the hotel is easy walking distance to the Fernsehturm (TV Tower) and Nikolaiviertel.
Stadmitte is only a couple of stops away on the U2 line, where you can shop at Galleries La Fayette and Postdamer Platz (a major commercial centre) is only 5 stops down the line.
Check in was simple, and we had a large double room, which made the room rate of €70 per night seem a bit of a bargain. The room was nicely decorated / furnished and spotlessly clean.
The batroom was large and modern and we had plenty of wardrobe space.
The service was very efficient - We had a small problem with the safe when we arrived, and this was resolved within 5 minutes of us calling reception with minimum of fuss.
The only real negative I could think of was the thin walls between rooms. Whilst this didn't cause too many problems, apart from the odd alarm clock and telephone ringing, I could imagine that if we'd have had noisy neighbours, we would not have been happy. I must say though I have experienced this problem in many hotels.
We did not eat breakfast / dinner at the hotel so I can not comment on this.
Overall a very nice hotel, and if you are looking for a reasonably priced hotel for a short break in Berlin, then this is the place for you.
