Our first stop in France after a long drive from Germany was a little hard to find the hotel with only the internet directions as a guide. Driving from Avallon it is about a 10min drive down a dark lane beside the river. Arriving after 10pm our plans for a walk to a local cafe for a late night meal were soon dashed when we found out that it was in a rather secluded location- this in all was more a benefit than a detraction, but I must admit we did have visions of the Bates hotel as we ventured up the dark , gravelled drive. Also our late arrival would have been better announced as we had to wake the owners to access our room.
In the morning any concerns from the night before were quickly dispelled as we took in the lovely sight of the charming converted water mill on the shady banks of the passing stream.
Breakfasts by the river were delightful and dinner that evening in the same location was simple but amongst the best we had in France. The food assisted by a well sampled wine and beer list.
Our room was quite small(tiny actually) but a quick peek in some of the other rooms showed them to be larger. Our neighbours had 2 dogs the size of small horses in their room and they all seemed to sleep comfortably. Although not airconditioned the room was quite cool even during the 40C heatwave we struck.
Although not the Ritz the prices are extremely reasonable and the service was tres friendly especially in the face of our slaughtered guidebook French. A comfortable stay for 2 nights but we were ready for a larger more luxurious room by the time we left.
