When I'd gotten into Dublin exhausted after a long flight, I'd taken the first downtown hostel I could find and it turned out to be a badly maintained homeless shelter. I was prepared for more of the same when I rolled into Tralee late the next night and asked about hostels, so when I followed the directions to Finnegan's and found a clean, charming, beautifully maintained establishment, I was very pleased indeed!
Rooms are cleaned and sheets changed every day, so even if you're staying a couple of days, you get fresh sheets every single night. Every room is named after a famous Irish writer (I had the Yeats room), and each has its own scrupulously maintained bathroom. I didn't use the kitchen very much, but I had very favourable impressions of that as well.
I was travelling with a little stuffed dog, Roger Kneebend, and on my second night, in Castlegregory, I realized I couldn't find him anywhere. I despaired of ever finding him, but when I went back to Finnegan's, there he was sitting on the front table! The owner handed him back to me with a broad grin.
I found all of the staff very friendly and helpful, and always happy to accommodate me for one more day. They remembered me and gave me the same room every time I went back. I must have stayed there for a total of six nights in the two weeks that I was in Ireland. It left me with many happy memories of Tralee, and I can't wait to go back.
